Why doesn't the Tp-Link router distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi?

Even in the process of setting up the router for the first time, many are faced with a problem when everything seems to have been configured, but the Tp-Link router does not distribute the Internet, or does not distribute Wi-Fi. It's kind of the same thing, if there is no Wi-Fi network, then it's a matter of course that the Internet won't work either. But, in fact, there are two different problems that we will try to deal with in this article. And the problems are:

  • When the Tp-Link router is not distributing Wi-Fi. That is, after turning on the router, the wireless network does not appear, and is not displayed on any device.
  • And the second problem is when there is a Wi-Fi network, but when connected to it, the Internet does not work. Most likely, the computer will have "No Internet access", or "Limited".

Such a problem may appear not only on Tp-Link routers, but also on devices from other manufacturers. If you have a different router, then see this article. There can be many reasons why Wi-Fi does not work. In most cases, when there is no Wi-Fi network after setting up the router, the problem is in the device you are trying to connect. Therefore, you need to check on multiple devices. And if the Internet does not work, then most likely the parameters for connecting to the Internet provider were incorrectly set. Now we will consider these nuances using the example of Tp-Link routers.

What to do if the Tp-Link router is not distributing Wi-Fi?

Let's first consider a situation where there is no Wi-Fi network at all. It seems to me that this problem is very rare. Much more often, there is a network, but the Internet does not work. We will consider this case later in this article.

If you have a new router that is not yet upset, then the network will have a standard name. Something like: "TP-LINK_9415E8"... Therefore, many simply cannot find their network among many neighboring Wi-Fi networks. In the process of configuring the Tp-Link router, you can change the name of your network. You can see the instructions for configuring the router, for example TL-WR941ND.

Next, take a close look at the body of your router. There may be a button that is responsible for turning off and on the Wi-Fi network. It can be recessed into the body.

You can also check if Wi-Fi is enabled in the Tp-Link settings. To do this, go to the settings of your router (if there is no Wi-Fi network, then connect to the router via cable). Type in the browser address 192.168.1.1 and go over it. Enter your username and password (default: admin and admin). You can see the detailed instructions for entering the control panel.

In the settings go to the tabWireless, and see if there is a check mark next to the itemEnable Wireless Router Radio... It is this item in the settings that is responsible for enabling the wireless module.

And yet, check if the antennas are well attached to the router (if they are removable), and see how the indicator that is responsible for Wi-Fi behaves.

Why the Internet does not work through Tp-Link

It may be that after setting up the router, all devices connect to Wi-Fi, but the Internet does not work. Over a network cable, the Internet may also not work. Here, most likely, the problem is in the settings of the Internet provider (which must be set in the settings of the router), or in the wrong connection of the network cable to the WAN connector.

On computers, as a rule, the connection status will be "Without Internet access". In Windows 8 and Windows 10 - "Limited" (I wrote about the solution to this problem here). On smartphones, tablets, TVs and other devices, sites simply will not open. Programs that need internet access will not work.

It is about the problems with connecting to the Internet during the first setup of the router, I have already prepared a separate article: when setting up the router, it writes "No Internet access", or "Limited" and there is no Internet connection.

Speaking specifically about Tp-Link, then you need to check two things: the correct connection of the cable from the Internet provider to the router, and the settings of the Internet connection on the router.

1. The cable that the Internet provider has laid into your house, or the cable from the ADSL modem, must be connected to the WAN connector of the router. Like this:

By the way, the Internet should work if, for example, you connect it to a computer. That is, it is necessary to exclude problems on the side of the provider. Maybe it's just that the money in the account has run out.

2. If everything is connected correctly, then we check the settings. Go to the settings page of your router (I wrote above how to do this). Go to the tab Network - WAN... Select the required connection type from the list and fill in the required fields.

You should check with your provider for the type of connection. Also, the provider must give you the necessary data to connect: login, password, IP-address. If necessary for your connection type. You can find more information on this topic here.

So we figured out why Tp-Link routers may not distribute a Wi-Fi network. I think you managed to fix everything. If you have any questions, then leave them in the comments to this post.
