Another instruction on Linksys devices (Cisco), and in this article we will update the firmware of the Linksys router. I'll show you the firmware process using the Linksys E1200 model as an example. This manual will work for other devices with the same control panel.

In terms of firmware, Linksys routers are no different from other devices. We also need to download the firmware file from the official website for our model first, then connect the computer to the router via cable, and upload the firmware. Nothing complicated. The only pity is that there is no automatic software update function. When the router checks itself, downloads and installs the update. As is done, for example, in ASUS and ZyXel devices.

To be honest, I was not able to flash my Linksys E1200. I downloaded the file, connected everything, the update starts, and 10% writes "Update error". But, since I was already in the mood to prepare the instruction, I decided to do it all the same. I will write about the problem that I have at the end of the article.

We select and download the firmware for the Linksys router

In this article, we consider updating the software (from the official website), and not flashing the router with alternative firmware such as DD-WRT, mirwifi, etc.

The current version of the installed software on your router can be viewed in the control panel, on the "Status" tab.

Pay attention not only to the version number, but also to the "build" and the date. As you can see in the screenshot above, I had version 2.3.00 build 1 installed, dated October 14, back in 2013. And the site already has firmware Ver.2.0.07 (build 2) from 01.16.2015.

Go to the Linksys official website and download the firmware file for our router. Here is a link directly to the support page: http://www.linksys.com/ua/support/ We click on it, and in the search field we write the model of our router. For example, I have a "Linksys E1200". Your device should appear below, select it.

A new page will open. Scroll down to the bottom and follow the link "Download Software".

Now attention! We need to find out the hardware version of our Linksys router. To choose the right firmware. It's easy to find out the version: There is a sticker on the bottom of the router. And there this version is indicated. For example, I have V2.

We go back to the site, and open the tab that corresponds to the hardware version of our router. I get "Hardware version 2.0".

First on the list is Firmware. The version is listed there, and the date when it was added. To download the software file, you need to click on the "Download" button. Another window will appear, click on the "AGREE" button.

Save the .bin file to your computer.

Linksys Firmware Manual

It is recommended to update the software only when connected to the router via a network cable. Otherwise, the router may fail.

Therefore, we take a network cable and connect to our router.

Next, open the browser and go to the address 192.168.1.1... You should be prompted for a username and password. Factory: admin and admin. Here are detailed instructions on how to enter the control panel.

In the settings, go to the "Administration" - "Firmware update" tab.

Click on the "Select file" button, select the file on your computer, open it and click on the "Start update" button.

The software update process starts.

When the update process starts, do not click, turn off, or cancel. Better not to touch anything at all.

We are waiting for everything to end and the router to reboot. This completes the update.

Linksys Software Update Issues: "Update Failed"

I hope you succeeded. And I just couldn't update the software of my Linksys E1200. As I wrote at the beginning of the article, when the process reaches 10%, a message appears: "Update error", the router reboots, and that's it.

I do not know what this is connected with. I downloaded the firmware according to the hardware version. Tried using a different network cable, and updating from a different browser. It did not help, everything is exactly an error. I also tried to disable the antivirus.

So I did not find a reason, I lost something of a desire to understand this. Maybe I'll try to find a solution later. And if you know what could be the matter, or have encountered such an error, then write to me in the comments. Good luck!
