I got a TP-LINK TL-WR842ND router, and I decided to write a small instruction on how to update the firmware. We already have a universal instruction for updating software on TP-LINK routers on our website. On which you can also flash TP-LINK TL-WR842ND. But I know firsthand that setting up something is much easier and clearer according to the instructions, which are written specifically for a specific device.

In addition, many have many problems with finding the firmware itself. Therefore, I will give a link to download the software specifically for the TL-WR842ND router from the TP-LINK official website.

Find out the hardware version of the router, and download the firmware for TP-LINK TL-WR842ND

At the moment, there are two hardware versions of the TL-WR842ND router. Be sure to find out the hardware version of our router, and download the corresponding firmware. It is important.

To find out the version of the router, just look at the sticker on the bottom of the device. Here's an example:

As you can see, I have the first version of the device - Ver: 1.0. We remember it. If for example there is "Ver: 1.1", then you have V1.

There is a version of the TP-LINK TL-WR842ND (RU) router. This is an updated version, especially for the Russian market. The main difference between the "RU" version and the usual TL-WR842ND is the control panel in Russian and support for 3G / 4G modems. Support for USB modems is also available in the second hardware version V2.

Firmware for TL-WR842ND (RU) and TL-WR842ND models are different. Choose the firmware strictly for your model and hardware version.

To download, follow the appropriate link:

  • For TL-WR842ND: http://www.tp-link.ua/ru/download/TL-WR842ND_V1.html#Firmware
  • For TL-WR842ND (RU): http://www.tp-linkru.com/download/TL-WR842ND(RU).html (firmware in Russian).

Be sure to select the hardware version of the router from above.

In my case, this is V1. Next, scroll down to the bottom of the page and download the required firmware. The first on the list is the newest. It contains information on the release date, version, language of settings, and description of improvements. By the way, about the Russian firmware for TP-LINK TL-WR842ND. Unfortunately, there is none. All versions are in English.

To download a file, just click on the link and save the archive to your computer.

It remains only to extract the firmware from the archive. Just open the archive and extract a file with the name "wr842ndv1_en_3_12_25_up_boot (130322) .bin" from it.

TP-LINK TL-WR842ND software update

You need to update the software only when connected to the router via cable. I do not recommend Wi-Fi, the router may fail.

Just connect the router to your computer using a cable. Like this:

It is better to turn off Wi-Fi on the computer (if any), or simply disconnect from the Wi-Fi network of your router. It is not necessary to disconnect the WAN cable.

So, connected, now we need to go to the router settings. We open any browser and go to the addresstplinklogin.net, or 192.168.0.1... You will be prompted for a username and password. Factory settings, as usual: admin and admin. If you have changed them before, please enter your details. If you can't get into the settings, then the solutions are collected in this article.

In the control panel, go to the tabSystem ToolsFirmware Upgrade (System Tools - Firmware Update). Click on the "Select file" button, select the firmware file on your computer, and click on the "Upgrad" button. A message will appear, click "Ok".

The software update process begins.

During the update, never turn off the power of the router. In general, it is better not to touch or press anything.

After the update is over, the router will restart and the main page of the control panel will automatically open.

That's it, the firmware update for TP-LINK TL-WR842ND router is complete. If you still have any questions, then leave them in the comments.
