I didn't quite understand what the specific connection status was immediately after turning on the laptop (when it does not see the Wi-Fi network). You wrote: "network icon with a red cross ...". Wireless icon, or LAN? Is there an adapter in Device Manager at this point and is there any errors in it? Or is there no wireless network at all? It is important.
You have not written what you have already tried to do. Therefore, adjust the power supply to the adapter.
If this does not help (and most likely does not help), then you need to try other drivers. Can search for equipment ID. I think the problem is in the wifi module driver.
Is there a driver for Lenovo G580 on the official website for Windows 7? Have you installed it? Moreover, it all started after installing Windows 7 (as you wrote). And what about the seven was established?
