A few months ago I already reviewed the TP-Link Deco M5 Mesh system. I liked not only the look of these devices, but also how simple and quick it all can be connected and configured. And of course, excellent performance, simple control, a huge Wi-Fi network coverage with the ability to expand with additional modules, a seamless Wi-Fi network and many other chips that are not lacking in the more affordable, junior TP-Link Deco M4 system. It is this Mesh system that we will be reviewing today. If you do not quite understand what is at stake, then I recommend reading the article Wi-Fi Mesh systems - what it is and why the future belongs to Mesh networks.

There are two sets of delivery of TP-Link Deco M4: one and two modules. I have a set of two modules (2-pack) that can cover an area of 260 sq.m. with a Wi-Fi signal. Of course, the coverage area of a wireless network depends on a huge number of different factors. But one module in this regard is in no way inferior to a conventional router. You can buy one module of the Deco M4 system, and if after setup it turns out that the Wi-Fi network coverage is not very stable, or there is no signal in some rooms (or it is bad), then buy another module. Or several. And not necessarily Deco M4. The modules of different TP-Link Mesh systems are fully compatible. But as far as I understand, the main module (to which the Internet is connected) should be a module from the older system. We will also talk about the technical characteristics of TP-Link Deco M4, see the appearance, but first I would like to highlight the main features of this Mesh system from TP-Link.

  1. Seamless Wi-Fi network throughout the house, apartment, office. Wi-Fi in the garage, in the yard, in the gazebo and anywhere. One seamless Wi-Fi network that allows devices to switch between modules without losing connection. Expanding Wi-Fi network by installing additional Deco M4 modules.
  2. Performance. This system is capable of withstanding a serious load. You can not only connect many devices (up to 100), but also use this connection comfortably. Simultaneous downloading of files on different devices, online games, videos in 4k - no problem.
  3. High speed wireless network due to support for 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5 GHz). Older devices can be connected to a 2.4 GHz network. The modules can be connected to each other both via Wi-Fi and via a network cable (for higher speed).
  4. Very easy setup, the process of adding new modules and managing the entire TP-Link Deco M4 Wi-Fi Mesh System via the Deco app from your phone or tablet.

Deco M4 is based on Qualcomm's chipset. Each module has two built-in Wi-Fi antennas.

Two LAN / WAN ports (with automatic detection of the operating mode) on each module. The ports are gigabit, that is, they support speeds up to 1 Gb / s. You can connect the Internet to one port (if it is the main module), and to the second port you can connect a computer or TV. Or connect two Deco M4 modules with a cable.

In the 5 GHz band, the maximum speed of the Wi-Fi network is 867 Mbps. And in the 2.4 GHz band - 300 Mbps. There is support for MU-MIMO technology, Beamforming, Auto Path Selection, AP Steering, Band Steering, Self-Healing. You can create one guest Wi-Fi network in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Each module of this system can operate in the mode of a router, or an access point.

There is a remote control function (via the Internet). Ability to configure port forwarding, QoS (data prioritization), create a blacklist of devices. Also, this system is able to download and update the firmware of all modules automatically.

TP-Link Deco M4 appearance

A package with two modules looks like this:

Everything is packed nicely and securely.

Inside there are two modules, two boxes with power adapters, a network cable and a small instruction.

The modules themselves look very cool and stylish. They are made of white and black matte plastic of excellent quality. The build is very good.

Above is a grill with an interesting design and holes for cooling the Wi-Fi Mesh system. In the center is the TP-Link company logo, which is also an indicator of the module's operation.

There are two WAN / LAN ports on the back.

Power is connected from below. There is also a Reset button to reset the settings and a sticker with factory information.

There are rubber feet on the bottom, thanks to which the module stands very stable and does not slip. All wires are hidden behind the module, so that after connecting them, they are practically invisible.

TP-Link Deco M4 modules look great, unusual, and fit any decor without any problems. They will look great both on your office desk and on your bedroom shelf.

Home Mesh Wi-Fi system Deco M4 is the optimal solution for medium and large apartments, houses, offices. One module for the price of a normal router. And in no way inferior to him. But in the case of installing a module of this Wi-Fi systems, we always have the opportunity to buy another module and expand the Wi-Fi network. Moreover, it is impossible to create a seamless Wi-Fi network, which cannot be done with a router and repeater.

The only drawback of this system is the lack of a USB port. It will not work to create a DLNA server or file sharing based on this system. Unless you buy a NAS (network attached storage), install it and connect it to one of the modules. Of course, not everyone needs a USB port. For example, I now have a powerful TP-Link Archer C3150 ver. 2 router. It has two USB ports, the ability to set up offline file download, file sharing, DLNA. But I don't use it этим

If you are considering buying a router and repeater. Or use a second router as a Wi-Fi network booster - forget it. Mesh systems are our future. Bought, installed and forgotten.
