Problems with Wi-Fi on the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 laptop: disconnects, does not see the network, does not catch the Wi-Fi network well

Greetings. Please help me figure out this Wi-Fi problem - the errors "Without access to the Internet", and "Limited" appear, the list contains only one network to which it was connected (other available networks that were previously visible are not displayed), but the connection missing, I press disconnect - and this network also disappears. I read all your recommendations and articles carefully and checked everything on a laptop - Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13, Lenovo_MT_20175; Windows 10; Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-3537U CPU) but unfortunately nothing helped:

  • rebooted my router;
  • checked if the network is enabled in the parameters (section "Airplane mode");
  • checked that the WLAN autoconfiguration service is enabled and running, the startup type is "Automatic";
  • checked, power supply by wireless networks is always on;
  • checked that the wireless connection is enabled in the network control center;
  • I checked that there is no separate physical button (Wi-Fi switch) on this laptop.

At the same time, other devices are connected to your network - phones and other laptops (including the second, more modern Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13) never turn off and there are no problems with Wi-Fi connection.

The diagnostic and troubleshooting tool fixes this error automatically, the "Fixed" status appears and Wi-Fi starts working for a while (day - week), but then it disappears again, and sometimes the troubleshooter does not fix the error and you have to reinstall the driver (driver downloaded from Lenovo official website), and after reinstalling Wi-Fi it starts working again for a while.

Also, the Wi-Fi signal began to be received by the laptop weaker - earlier it "caught" the connection throughout the apartment, and now only near the router (the router settings did not change).
Also, the signal and the list of Wi-Fi networks disappear if you connect headphones or a mouse to the laptop via Bluetooth - the diagnostic and troubleshooting tool does not fix this problem and you have to reinstall the driver.

I don't remember exactly, but most likely the problem began to arise in 2017-2018, possibly after disassembling the laptop in April 2018 and cleaning it from dust.

If the problem is in a faulty module (WiFi card) - is it possible to replace the native Wi-Fi card (Realtek RTL8723AU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter, number ZZ10034322M - Supported Wi-Fi frequency: 2.4 GHz) with another newer and a more powerful model with a frequency of 2.4 GHz, or a model with 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies - and stable working, or an original one, and if possible - which card would you recommend? I found RTL8723 BGN USB + USB BT WLAN 802.11bgn and bt, number ZZ1003850PM - will it work?
Help please, thank you in advance.

Answer

Hello! Thank you for a detailed and competent description of the problem.

I think this is understandable, but I will emphasize - the problem with Wi-Fi on the laptop side. Something with the laptop itself (in your case, the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13), the system / settings / drivers, or the Wi-Fi module itself (which is most likely).

This sometimes happens due to problems with the power supply of the Wi-Fi module (and in a laptop a wireless WLAN module combined with Bluetooth). Moreover, there are both software problems (but you wrote that you prohibited disabling the adapter to save energy) and hardware. You can also look at the article Turns off Wi-Fi in Windows 10 and Configure the power supply of the wireless network adapter. Recently, there was a case when Wi-Fi started to glitch and turn off when the temperature of the motherboard rose strongly (the bridge was heating up).

Plus, in your case, the Wi-Fi network reception is poor on the laptop and Wi-Fi disappears when you start connecting devices to the laptop via Bluetooth. By the way, there may be problems with the antenna. It is not uncommon in the process of disassembling a laptop (for cleaning, for example) antennas are incorrectly connected, the cable is pinched, and it is torn off.

I am leaning towards replacing the Wi-Fi module. This should solve your problems. But before such a radical decision, I recommend doing the following:

  1. Reinstall Windows 10.
  2. Install the same driver from Lenovo website. Experiment with replacing the driver from the list of installed ones.
  3. In the properties of Realtek RTL8723AU Wireless LAN 802.11n in the device manager, on the "Advanced" tab, select the "Bluetooth (R) AMP" setting and disable it.
  4. If you wish, you can experiment with other parameters on the "Advanced" tab. But this is unlikely to give any result.
  5. Disassemble the laptop and check the antenna connections to the wireless module.

I have experience in replacing the Wi-Fi module only on an ASUS laptop. I talked about this in the article How to replace the Wi-Fi module in a laptop. You can also replace the built-in Wi-Fi module with USB. There are Nano models (small). You can read: Wi-Fi adapter for laptop. How to replace the built-in Wi-Fi module? Alternatively, do it for a while to find out what is the reason. In this case, the built-in Wi-Fi module must be disabled.

Something very little information on this Realtek RTL8723AU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter. If you believe the information on the Internet, Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 has some kind of small Wi-Fi module that connects with a loop. And not through Mini PCI Express, as is usually the case.

It is not clear which module to replace it with, and whether it can be replaced at all. But I think you can. And this RTL8723 BGN USB + USB BT WLAN, judging by its appearance, should fit.
