Strengthening Wi-Fi network signal using ASUS WL-500gP and laptop

Good afternoon. A question. I live in a hotel with free wi-fi, but the signal is very weak from the adapter, which is in the corridor. I have a WL500gp router, and I have two laptops. One of them I want to use to transmit a wi-fi signal to my ASUS WL-500gP router so that it amplifies it and then sends a good and strong signal to my second laptop.

How to set up both the first laptop and router to transmit and receive a signal according to the scheme: hotel wi-fi - receiving it on the first laptop - distributing wi-fi from the first laptop to my WL500gp router to amplify the signal - transmitting good wi-fi from my router to my second laptop. The room does not have sockets for entering the Internet cable. Please tell me how to set up a router and a laptop to distribute and receive a signal. Or suggest another circuit to amplify the wi-fi signal. Thanks.

Answer

Good afternoon. The scheme with Wi-Fi reception on a laptop and transmission to a router via a cable is very strange, complicated and generally hardly configurable.

It looks like this:

  • We connect the laptop to the hotel's Wi-Fi network.
  • Reset the settings on the ASUS WL-500gP router.
  • Connect the cable from the laptop's network card to the WAN port on the WL-500gP.
  • On a laptop, go to the "Network Connections" window, hold down Ctrl, select two adapters. Wi-Fi connection - Wireless network connection (the name depends on the installed Windows) and cable connection. Click on one of them with the right mouse button and select "Bridge Configuration". We follow the instructions.
  • After that, the laptop should transmit the Internet from the Wi-Fi adapter via LAN to the router.

But I have not tested this scheme. Not sure if it will work.

ASUS WL-500gP in bridge or repeater mode

It's a pity I don't have an ASUS WL-500gP, I can't check everything. But I think that in the settings of ASUS WL-500gP it should be possible to configure it in bridge mode. When he accepts the Internet via Wi-Fi and distributes it further. This mode would be perfect for you. Go to the ASUS router settings and take a look. Perhaps this setting is in the tabWireless - Bridge.

There you need to select the hotel's WI-FI network, set a password from it (if any) and the WL-500gP will connect to it. And you will already be connecting to the Wi-Fi network of your router.

In general, for these tasks it is better to use a regular repeater.

I am in touch in the comments.
