First and foremost, in order to access the Internet from a TV, you must have a Smart TV. Supports Smart TV function. If the TV is an ordinary one, without Smart TV, then there is no way to go online from it. How to find out, I wrote in the article Smart TV function on TV: is it there or not, how to check. If all is well, you have a "smart" TV, then you can connect it to the Internet and use the connection directly on the TV itself. Second and not less important: by "going online" I mean browsing sites through a browser. Web surfing. As from a computer or mobile devices. Smart TVs have many pre-installed applications that use internet access. First of all, these are various video services such as YouTube, ivi, Netflix, etc. Plus, these applications can be installed independently from the application store. This also requires an internet connection.

Most often, on TVs, they go online through a web browser to watch free movies on different sites. It is the online viewing of films, TV series, TV shows, which, as a rule, are paid in special applications. For example, in the same ivi, or MEGOGO, all new and good films and series are paid. Either by subscription, or you need to buy a movie (rent). And through the browser on the TV, these films and TV shows can be watched for free, like from a computer, tablet, or phone. Of course, sometimes it's better to use separate applications. For example, what's the point of watching YouTube through a browser on a TV, if you can use a special application from Google for this, which is usually already installed from the factory on all TVs with Smart TVs. Read more in the article how to watch YouTube on TV. Unless YouTube stopped working on your TV (the application itself), then you can try to open it through a browser.

In this article I will show you how to launch a browser and access the Internet on Smart TVs LG, Samsung, Philips, Sony. Use the search for information on the Internet, open a site, watch online videos on any sites, listen to music. In principle, this instruction is also suitable for TVs Xiaomi Mi TV, Kivi, TCL, Ergo, Yasin, Hisense, Akai, Gazer, etc. For TVs that run on Android TV, and these are almost all modern TVs except Samsung and LG.

The only point: if the TV is old, then there may be problems loading and displaying new sites in the TV browser. This is due to the fact that the browser does not support certain technologies (for example, HTML 5) that new sites are actively using now. For example, a video player may not work on the site, it will not be possible to open an online movie, since the player is built on HTML 5, and the TV browser does not support it.

A few more words about navigation (movement through links and other elements on sites) in the browser itself. As a rule, navigation is carried out using the buttons on the remote control. It is much more convenient to flip through sites using a remote control with a built-in gyroscope. For example, LG Magic Remote. You can also connect a regular mouse and keyboard to the TV. You can connect both wired (via USB) and wireless. You can see the instructions on the example of an LG TV.

Very important: TV must be connected to the internet! In this article, I will not give instructions on how to connect to the Internet (except for links to individual articles). The TV can be connected to the Internet either via Wi-Fi or using a network cable. And the Internet on the TV should work.

You have everything connected, the Internet is working, now let's take a closer look at how to access the Internet from our Smart TV TV.

Internet access from Samsung Smart TV

If the TV is not yet connected to the Internet, then we connect it. You can watch my instructions on how to connect your Samsung TV to a Wi-Fi network. If you will be connecting via a network cable, then see this article: Connecting a Samsung Smart TV to the Internet via a network cable.

  1. Open the Smart TV menu with the button on the remote control. It usually looks like this:
  2. We launch the browser. Samsung TVs call it "Internet".
If it is not on the main screen, then find it among the applications on the "APPS" tab. After opening the full menu (three bars on the left).
  3. Most likely, there will be some bookmarks on the main browser screen. To enter a site address, or a search term, you need to click on the line "Enter the URL, or keyword". For example: enter the address of this site and click on it.
You can type a search query. For example "watch movies online" or specify the name of a specific movie. After that, search results will open in the search engine, where you can already go to a specific site.
  4. In our case, we opened a specific site on a Samsung Smart TV.
Using the cursor, you can move between elements on the site itself, or between buttons and menu items in the browser.

A few tips and tricks:

  • If the TV is not connected to the Internet, or it is connected but the Internet does not work (this can also be), then when you try to open the browser and go online, the error "Failed to connect to the network" will appear. Or, when you try to open the site, a message appears that there is no Internet connection, or an error with DNS.
In solving this error, the following article can help you: Samsung TV does not see Wi-Fi, does not connect to the Internet. Connection error in Smart TV menu and Internet does not work.
  • In a Samsung TV browser, almost everything is the same as in any browser on a computer. You can create new tabs, there are buttons for forward, back, home page. It is possible to add sites to the "Favorites" and change the scale of the page. And there is even a separate menu where you can open browser options.
  • In the options, you can customize the home page, change the search engine, and set your privacy settings. You can also clear your browser history there.
A simple, straightforward browser that is very easy to use.

Now you know how to go online on Samsung TVs. Move on.

How to access the Internet on LG Smart TV?

As with any other TV, it must first be connected to the internet. This is where these articles may come in handy:

  • How to connect LG Smart TV to the Internet via Wi-Fi via a router.
  • How to connect your LG TV to the Internet via a cable (LAN).

We connect the LG TV to the Internet, make sure that it works and do the following:

  1. Press the "Home" or "Smart" button to open the Smart TV menu. Or open the list of programs with the "My APPS" button.
  2. Find and launch the Web Browser (WWW) application among the installed applications on the LG Smart TV.
  3. The browser on the LG TV also has an address bar, which is combined with a search bar. This means that you can enter a website address or a search query in it. Everything is the same as in other browsers. The browser even gives hints right away.
  4. Open tabs are displayed below. You can create new tabs, or close them.
  5. The icon with the screen on the icon bar (on the right) opens a small window over the browser window in which you can watch TV channels. There is also a button for changing the scale of the page in the browser, an icon that opens a menu, enables full-screen view and closes the browser.
On LG TVs it is especially convenient to surf the Internet using the Magic Remote. You don't even need a mouse.

In general, the browser on LG TVs works very smartly and supports all the necessary technologies. You can even watch online videos on sites without any problems. True, these TVs sometimes have the "Not enough memory" error. It seems like connecting an empty flash drive to the USB port of the TV helps.

If you have problems connecting to the Internet, then see the article Problems with Wi-Fi on LG Smart TV: does not see the Wi-Fi network, does not connect, the Internet does not work.

Internet on Philips Smart TV

On Philips TVs, the browser is not as cool as on Samsung or LG. Not my 2015 Philips TV, anyway. But even in it you can open sites. I even once started watching online videos on the websites.

The first step is to connect our Philips TV to the Internet. If necessary, see the instructions on how to connect Philips TVs to the Internet via Wi-Fi and a network cable.

  1. Open the Smart TV menu with a button with a house icon.
  2. We find and launch the Internet application among the applications. It is through this application that you can access the Internet on Philips TVs.
  3. Then just enter the site address. Please note that only the website address can be entered in the address bar. You cannot enter search queries there. To search for something on the Internet, you first need to go to the same google.com and enter search queries there.
  4. Having opened the site, you can navigate through its elements (links) using the buttons on the remote control. If you connect a mouse, a cursor will appear. If you click on the "Options" button (on the remote control), then on the left you will see options where you can enter a new address, show favorites, reload the page, add the site to favorites, etc.
These are almost all the functions and capabilities of the browser on a Philips TV (Android TV).

I have not tried it, but I think that on Android TV you can try to somehow install Google Chrome, or another browser and replace the built-in browser with it, which is not very suitable for accessing the Internet from a TV.

Browsing Sites Using a Web Browser on Sony Smart TVs

After making sure that the TV is connected to the Internet, you can proceed to launch the browser on the TV. We do everything according to the instructions:

  1. Launch the Smart TV menu with the button on the remote control.
  2. Launch Internet Browser (Opera). Yes, judging by the instructions on the Sony website, the Opera browser is installed on these TVs by default.
  3. In the address bar, enter the site address, or search query and confirm the transition by selecting "GO" on the on-screen keyboard.
  4. In the Opera browser on Sony TVs, there are also separate tabs with the history of visited sites, tabs (open ones are displayed, you can create new ones) and bookmarks.
If you have a touch panel remote control, it is very convenient to control your browser and browse websites. Using buttons is of course a little more complicated.

Conclusions

A browser that allows you to access the Internet is in every Smart TV TV. Somewhere it is better implemented, somewhere worse. Also, the capabilities and functionality of the browser depends on the year of manufacture of the TV and the installed firmware. Therefore, I recommend installing a firmware update for your TV. Or update the application itself (browser). This can usually be done in the app store. If the standard browser on the TV is completely bad, then you can try installing another browser from the application store (if there is one), or download the application on third-party sites and install it from a USB flash drive. But this is already a topic for another article, everything is complicated there, and Smart TV platforms are different, so there can be no universal advice.

In any case, you can access the Internet from any Smart TV that is connected to the Internet. But how convenient it is to use the TV for surfing the Internet, what tasks it allows you to perform, how quickly and stably it works - that's another question. And even if you have the newest and most modern TV, this is primarily a TV, and not a device for Internet surfing.
