Why does my Smart TV TV not see Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz band?

There are a lot of smart TVs on the market now, as well as dual-band routers that can distribute Wi-Fi simultaneously at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. But not infrequently there is a situation when the TV does not see a Wi-Fi network in the 5 GHz range. He simply does not find it, the network does not appear in the list of networks available for connection. In doing so, as a rule, other devices find this wireless network and connect to it. Of course, it only makes sense to understand this problem if your TV has support for Wi-Fi 5 GHz (802.11ac standard) and you have a dual-band router. Now we will try to figure it out. I will only add that the TV manufacturer in this case does not matter. This problem is observed on Smart TVs LG (WebOS), Smasung, Sony, Philips, TCL, Kivi, Ergo, etc.

There are many reasons a TV might not be able to see wireless networks. I wrote about some of them in this article (using the example of LG TVs). In this article, we will look at the problem with connecting to networks in the 5 GHz band. Before moving on to solving the problem and trying to get your TV to connect to Wi-Fi at 5 GHz, be sure to make sure:

  • That your TV has Wi-Fi 5 GHz (802.11ac) support. Very often people try to connect a TV to a Wi-Fi router that does not have Wi-Fi, or there is no support for Smart TV at all (such a TV cannot be connected to the Internet at all). Find out the model of your TV (look at the box, on the sticker), type the model in the search engine, go to the manufacturer's official website and see the specifications.
If there is support for the 802.11ac standard, then the TV can definitely connect to networks in the 5 GHz range. If 802.11n - then most likely not.
Unfortunately, not all manufacturers indicate such detailed characteristics of the built-in Wi-Fi module. And on different sites, or in online stores, most often this information is not indicated at all (even if it is on the official website). In any case, knowing the TV model, you can always dial the manufacturer's support number and ask.
  • That you have a dual-band router and it broadcasts a Wi-Fi network in the 5 GHz range (it can be disabled in the router settings). Typically, the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network name is distinguished by the "_5G" prefix in the wireless network name.
Make sure other devices (which support this band) find and connect to your network. Related article: why a laptop, smartphone, or tablet does not see a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
  • That the TV is in a stable 5 GHz wireless coverage area. Keep in mind that compared to the 2.4 GHz band, the range of this network is generally slightly shorter.

If you are all right on these three points, the router broadcasts the desired network, and the TV should connect to it (but for some reason does not see it), then you need to try to apply one solution that usually helps in this situation.

If the TV does not find a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network

You need to change the Wi-Fi network channel in the 5 GHz range in the router settings. Put static channel 36, 40, 44, or 48.

First you need to go to the settings of your router. I do not know what kind of router you have, so I will leave a link to the universal instruction: how to enter the settings of the router. In the web interface, open the Wi-Fi network settings.

Important! You need to change the wireless settings for the 5 GHz band. After installing a static channel, be sure to save the settings and reboot the router. It is also advisable to turn off the TV for a few minutes.

Now I'll show you how to change the Wi-Fi network channel on routers from some manufacturers.

TP-Link

These parameters can be found in the "Wireless 5GHz" section. In the "Channel" menu, put one of the channels I wrote about above.

We save the settings and reboot the router. You can reboot in the settings. Section "System Tools" - "Reboot".

This is how these settings look on the new TP-Link firmware:

Don't forget to save your settings!

ASUS

In the "Wireless Network" section, select "5GHz" and change the channel to 36, 40, 44, or 48.

Apply the parameters and reboot the router (the "Reboot" button at the top of the page).

D-Link

Go to "Wi-Fi" - "Basic Settings" - "5 GHz". We put a static channel and apply the settings.

If you do not know how to change the number of the Wi-Fi network channel for the 5 GHz range on your router, write the model of the router in the comments. And it is also desirable to attach a screenshot of the web interface (page with settings). I will try to suggest where and how to do this on your device.

Please also let me know in the comments if this solution helped you. Did your Smart TV see a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network and connect to it? What kind of TV and router do you have?

If you found another solution to this problem, you can share it with us in the comments. Good luck!
