Now you can get acquainted with the TP-LINK TL-WR842ND router. I already managed to set it up, check it in operation, and understand what kind of router it is and for what tasks it is suitable.

I can tell right away that the TL-WR842ND is just a great inexpensive router for your home. He really has everything he needs. In terms of characteristics, this router is practically no different from the popular TP-LINK TL-WR841ND. As far as I know, they are built on the same processor and wireless controller. And they are very similar in appearance. Only TL-WR842ND has white antennas, and I liked them more than black ones.

One of the main advantages of TP-LINK TL-WR842ND is the presence of a USB connector. If you need an inexpensive router with a USB connector, then you can safely buy this model. In the USB connector, you can connect a USB storage device, or an external hard drive, and organize file sharing (FTP, or DLNA server). You can also connect a printer and set up a print server.

The second hardware version of the TL-WR842ND (RU) V2 router also supports 3G / 4G modems. If you are looking for a router to distribute the Internet from a USB modem, then you can safely consider this router (only the second hardware version V2). However, the router does not support all modems. The list of compatible modems can be found on the official website: http://www.tp-linkru.com/support/3g-comp-list/?model=TL-WR842ND(RU).

And also, on our website there is an instruction for setting up 3G / 4G modems on TP-LINK routers.

There is a little confusion with this model. The fact is that there is also a TL-WR842ND (RU) model (with (RU) at the end). This router model is made specifically for the Russian market. There the control panel is in Russian, and there is support for 3G / 4G modems.

A small overview of TL-WR842ND

I won't write much here. The router is made of white, matte plastic, which does not leave any prints or scratches. The body of the router itself is well known, I think to many, there are several models in such a case, and for a very long time. I personally have no complaints about the body itself, I liked everything. Well, as I wrote above, white antennas in the body color look much better than black ones.

On the front side there are, as usual, indicators that light up or blink when a certain function or connection is working. On the underside of the router you can see a sticker with very useful information. It contains the MAC address, address for entering the router settings, factory username and password, model and hardware version of the device. If you customize the TL-WR842ND, you will definitely have to look there.

On the back of the device there are two antennas (removable), 4 LAN ports, 1 WAN port, and 1 USB 2.0. There is a separate button to turn on / off the Wi-Fi network, and a WPS / RESET button to activate the WPS function, and reset the settings (if you hold the button for about 10 seconds). But there is no button to turn off the power, and it certainly would not be superfluous.

The router can be hung on the wall. The antennas are folded, the necessary holes are there.

Key features of TL-WR842ND

  • Wi-Fi speed up to 300 Mbps.
  • 1 WAN port - Ethernet. Speed 10 / 100Mbps.
  • 4 LAN ports with a maximum speed of up to 100 Mbps.
  • 1 USB 2.0 connector.
  • Two detachable 5dbi antennas.
  • There is support for guest Wi-Fi networks (in hardware version V 2.0). See instructions for setting up a guest network on TP-LINK.

These are the main characteristics. More detailed information about TP-LINK TL-WR842ND can be found on the official website: http://www.tp-linkru.com/products/details/cat-9_TL-WR842ND.html.

I really liked the router. I think the TL-WR842ND is just the perfect home router. And if you don't need a USB connector, then you can still save money and buy TL-WR841ND. But I would still recommend buying a router with a USB connector. Today you don't need it, but tomorrow you will want to organize a DLNA server, for example. Here, of course, it's up to you to decide.

Leave your feedback about TP-LINK TL-WR842ND in the comments. If you use this router, then I think you have something to write about it.
