Wi-Fi in iOS 11: it turns on itself, does not turn off, does not connect and other problems

After installing iOS 11 on iPhone and iPad, many users began to experience various problems connecting to Wi-Fi networks. However, when the iPhone does not connect to Wi-Fi, or the Internet does not work after connecting, this is not news, and it is unlikely that iOS 11 is to blame for this. Although, the surge of these problems appears precisely after installing the next update.

But the most popular Wi-Fi question in iOS 11 is why Wi-Fi doesn't turn off after being turned off at Control Center. Why does it turn on by itself and how to completely turn off the Wi-Fi network on an iPhone or iPad. It's not that it's a problem, it's just that the function is implemented. Although, it's a big mystery to me why they made such a decision. I'll tell you more about this below in the article.

Well, probably the only (noticeable) change in iOS 11 related to Wi-Fi is a function that allows you to connect to a wireless network without entering a password. It is enough to bring your phone or tablet from Apple to another iOS device, in which the password from this network is already saved, and in whose contacts there is your data. But I'll try to talk about this feature in another article. Hardly anyone will use it, but the solution is interesting.

On my iPhone 6 and iPad, after installing iOS 11, everything works without problems. However, I don't often connect to some new Wi-Fi networks. But not everyone is as lucky as me 🙂 So let's sort it out in order.

On iPhones and iPads with iOS 11, Wi-Fi does not turn off and turns on itself. What to do?

I checked, and indeed, there is such a problem. But this is more likely not even a problem, but such a special and original implementation of an Apple-style function that no one needs.

What's the point? If you turn off the Wi-Fi network by clicking on the icon in the control center (which is very convenient, and what many people use), then Wi-Fi will not be turned off completely. The iPhone will simply be disconnected from the Wi-Fi network. All connections will be dropped. And if you go to the Wi-Fi settings, then there we will see a message that "New connections over the Wi-Fi network are turned off in the control center." And the Wi-Fi itself is on. It just doesn't turn off completely. This is how it looks:

Many people write that in iOS 11 Wi-Fi itself turns on. This is most likely not the case. By simply disabling it in the control center, and going into the settings, they see that it is enabled.

Why this was done, I do not know. If you know, then write in the comments. A very strange and unnecessary decision.

To completely turn off Wi-Fi on the iPhone, you need to go into the settings in the old fashioned way and turn it off there.

Why then this control point, if you still need to climb through the settings. But only if you need to completely disable Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi connectivity issues in iOS 11

But the problems are the same: the iPhone (or iPad) does not see the Wi-Fi network, the "Failed to connect to the network" error, the connection is infinite, the password request does not appear, etc. As I understand it, there is nothing new in iOS 11 in this plan. And that's good 🙂

I wrote in great detail about solving all these problems in the following articles:

  • iPhone or iPad does not connect to Wi-Fi, Internet does not work
  • iPhone or iPad does not see Wi-Fi network

If you encounter any error while connecting to a wireless network, then you can try reconnecting, resetting network settings, or completely resetting your device. This can help, provided there is no problem with the access point itself. If other devices connect to this network and work normally.

  • First, restart your iPhone, iPad. Also reboot the router. If you have access to it.
  • Go to the settings, select the "problem" Wi-Fi network and click on "Forget this network" (if you have been connected to it before).
Then try connecting to that network.
  • Reset network settings. The most working way. In the process of writing this article, my iPhone 6 on iOS 11 did not want to connect to my home W-Fi network (I disconnected and reconnected it many times to take screenshots). The line in which you need to enter the password just did not appear. Resetting network settings helped. Go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset network settings. Confirm the action. Nothing bad will happen, only passwords from all Wi-Fi networks will fly off.
    The device will reboot.
  • Full factory reset. This is a last resort. Well, it's not a fact that this will help. All programs, settings, etc. will be deleted on the device. Think carefully before doing this. You can reset to factory settings in the same way as I showed above in the screenshot. Just select the "Reset all settings" item.

Since iOS 11 came out recently, it is possible that not all of the issues are known yet. If you have any interesting information on this topic, you can share it in the comments under this article. In the same place, in the comments, you can describe your problem. But only after reading the article and trying all the tips. All the best!
