A few days ago, a software update "arrived" on my Philips 43PUS7150 / 12 TV, which is on Android TV. I did not specifically update to take a photo, and write instructions for updating the Android TV firmware on Philips TVs. By the way, it seems to me that on SONY TVs, the firmware update is exactly the same.

Since the purchase, this is probably the fourth update. Updates are good, because according to the idea, there should be improvements, and more stable operation of the TV itself, which Philips TVs really lack. How many times have I already updated the firmware, but I haven't noticed any improvements or changes. Everything worked as it did. But, you still need to install updates. There are two ways to update your Philips TV (Android TV) software:

  • Updating the firmware via the Internet.
  • Software update via USB stick.

To be honest, I have not tried updating through a USB flash drive yet. But, the firmware itself is on the Philips website. We just download it, copy it to a USB flash drive, and select USB as the source for updating on the TV. I always install new software over the Internet. The TV itself downloads the firmware and installs it. I will write about this method below.

Updating the firmware of your Philips TV (Android TV) via the Internet

Since we will update our Android TV via the Internet, the TV must be connected to the Internet via a network cable, or via a Wi-Fi network.

After making sure that the Internet on the TV is working (you can, for example, start a video on YouTube), open Smart TV, and scroll to the "Settings" section. There we select the item "Update software"

Next, select the item "Search for updates".

And select "Internet" as a source.

The TV will check, and if it finds a new software update, it will offer to update. Click on the "Update" button.

Next, we accept the user agreement and wait for the TV to download the firmware. It weighs a lot, therefore, it all depends on the speed of your Internet connection.

If the TV turns off while downloading an update, then you need to turn off the automatic shutdown. Since my Internet is not very fast, I ran into an error when the TV, without downloading the update, showed a message that it would turn off after one minute. And to continue browsing, you need to click on the "Ok" button. After pressing, the TV viewing mode simply turned on. And the firmware process was interrupted.

I haven't faced such problem before. I decided simply: I turned off the automatic shutdown of the TV in the settings. There is such an item "Auto-off timer", set the value to 0.

Installing a system update on your Philips TV

As soon as the update is downloaded, the TV will prompt you to install it. Click on the "Start" button. The TV restarts and the installation of the system update starts. We wait.

Then, the TV will restart again and the Android update (application optimization) will start. We are waiting for this process to end.

After that, you can use the TV.

After update

It immediately became very buggy for me, Android TV barely started. And then, in general, a blue screen appeared, I already thought it was a blue screen of death 🙂

But, turning off the power of the TV, and turning it on, I was really happy. At the beginning of the article, I wrote that updates do nothing at all. So, when I wrote this, this update was just downloading. After installing it, everything works much faster. This is really noticeable. Especially navigating the Android TV menu itself. And in the Play Store, it has become even pleasant to browse applications.

The main thing is that the TV responds adequately and quickly to pressing buttons on the remote control. And then before the update, there were serious problems with this. I don't know, maybe everything will be the same, but I have already started to change my mind about Philips TVs and the Android TV system itself.

And one more good news, the wireless mouse is working! It didn’t work before. The cursor is very clear. In the browser, flipping through sites is a pleasure. But, in the Android TV menu itself, it is not possible to launch programs. They just aren't selected by the cursor. But, the button "forward" and "back" works. And in the YouTube app, for example, the mouse works great. Although, it is only needed for the browser.

Update, friends!
