I decided to open a section on this site with articles on MikroTik routers. And I decided to start with instructions on how to enter the settings of the MikroTik router. Let's take a closer look at how to enter RouterOS (on which these network devices are running) at 192.168.88.1, and deal with possible problems. When the page at 192.168.88.1 does not open and does not enter the router settings.

Many people bypass MikroTik routers. For the reason that they have a very complex web interface and are very difficult to configure. The operating system RouterOS these routers run on is a bit complex and heavily loaded with different settings. On the one hand, this is bad, since it will be difficult for an ordinary user who is not very versed in these chips to find and configure some function. But on the other hand, it is possible to very finely configure your MikroTik. Plus, these routers are very reliable and performant. And the price is good.

This is my first instruction on MikroTik, and my first acquaintance with the brand itself and the RouterOS system as well. And I want to say that there is nothing difficult there. All basic settings can be set on the main page (Wi-Fi setting, Internet connection, changing the password of the web interface). All you need is to connect to the MikroTik router via a Wi-Fi network, or via a network cable, go to the IP address 192.168.88.1 through a browser, set the necessary parameters and save.

How to enter 192.168.88.1 in the MikroTik router settings?

The device from which we will open the settings must be connected to the router. You can connect via Wi-Fi network. By default, the network is open, no password. Or with a network cable. My MikroTik hAP Lite TC did not come with a network cable, which is very bad.

On the computer, in the properties of the connection (through which you are connected to the router), you need to set the automatic receipt of the IP address. By default, as a rule, there is just automatic receipt of all addresses. If the web interface of the router does not open, then you need to check these parameters first.

To open the equation panel with the MikroTik router, you need to go to the address in the browser http://192.168.88.1... Any browser will do: Opera, Chrome, Internet Explorer, etc.

This is how the RouterOS web interface itself looks like:

As you can see in the screenshot above, on the main page, you can set almost all the necessary parameters. Yes, I agree that if you need to do port forwarding, for example, or something else, you will have to dig into the settings. There are a lot of them 🙂

Why doesn't it go to 192.168.88.1?

The most popular problem is when the settings cannot be opened by the IP address 192.168.88.1. The page does not open, or an error appears that "Cannot access the site", "Display the page", etc.

If so, try the following solutions:

  • Make sure that the IPv4 properties of your connection are set to get all addresses automatically.
    Read more about this here.
  • Check if you are connected to MikroTik router. Internet access may not be available. Internet is not needed to enter 192.168.88.1.
  • Reset your router settings.
  • By default, you do not need to enter a password when entering RouterOS settings. But it can be installed. And if a request for a password that you do not know appears, or the "Invalid password" error appears, then you also need to reset the router settings.
  • More information on this issue can be found in the article: does not enter the router settings. Do not pay attention that the article is written using the example of other IP addresses, and not 192.168.88.1.
  • Try to open the control panel from another browser or device.

Hope you were able to go into your MikroTik router settings. I didn't have any problems at all. Everything is even simpler than with other routers from more popular companies. Why is it easier? There is no default password for the Wi-Fi network and for access to the web interface. It's not difficult to enter RouterOS, but to understand it ... 🙂
