Why is the local network not working between Windows XP and Windows 10?

Hello. Before describing the problem, I will say that I studied the materials on your site and tried to configure the LAN according to the instructions given, but I am now writing this question, which means I did not succeed.

The situation is as follows. There is a PC of the year of release somewhere before 2004, it has XP and nothing newer it can not master. And there is a laptop. It runs Windows 10. Both of these machines have access to the Internet according to the scheme that I have depicted in this simple form (see figure).

The fact is that a decent amount of information has accumulated on the PC and copying it through a USB flash drive is masochism. It would be much more practical to make a local network and, through the network environment, simply by opening access to the disk on a PC, copy it to a laptop.

I don't know for what reasons, but I still managed to establish a connection between them, but something went wrong, wi-wi disappeared, and after working (or before) the wizard for troubleshooting the Internet, the PC disappeared from the network environment, and with Since then, no matter what I did, he never returned.

The laptop is visible on the network, but only if you look from it. The PC itself does not see itself on the network, nor the laptop, nor the network itself for it as if it does not exist.

So, help me, please, burn down the local network and tell me what to do.

Answer

Hello. It's difficult, of course, to set up a local network without having access to the computers themselves. And even between Windows 10 and Windows XP (which I don't have access to to even look at the settings there). Well, okay, let's try to find out what could be the reason for the lack of a local network between XP and ten.

The connection diagram itself does not raise any questions. Devices that are connected through the same router must be on the same network.

But you wrote:

wi-wi disappeared, and after the work (or before) the wizard for troubleshooting Internet problems, the PC disappeared from the network environment

What is it like? It turns out that the laptop (Windows 10) is not currently connected to the Wi-Fi network of the router to which the PC is connected via a cable? You kind of wrote that the Internet works.

On Windows 10

The first thing I recommend is to check the network settings on a Windows 10 laptop and be sure to enable SMB1 support. How to do all this, I wrote in detail in the article, the shared folders, network computers, flash drives, drives are not displayed on the "Network" tab of Windows Explorer.

Also on the laptop, you need to assign the Wi-Fi network (to which it is connected) the status of a private (home) one. This can be done according to the instructions: home (private) and public (public) network Windows 10. Or forget your Wi-Fi network and reconnect to it. The system will immediately ask whether to allow sharing. Click Yes.

Share the desired drive. Although, even without this, with Windows XP there must be network access to the shared folder.

On Windows XP

You also need to check the local network settings. It's more difficult here, of course. I haven't used Windows XP for a long time. But since the XP computer is connected to the router by cable, then, according to the idea, it is enough to open shared access to the local disk, or to the desired folder.

Well, you need to either turn off the Windows Firewall, or turn it on (check the box) next to "File and Printer Sharing".

In the properties of "Local Area Connection" must be set to automatically obtain IP for "Internet Protocol TCP / IP".

And further: stop the antivirus on both computers, if any. Also, a Windows XP PC and a Windows 10 laptop must be in the same workgroup.

Disable Windows Defender in Windows 10.

Alternatively, you can reset the network settings on both computers and try to configure everything again.

We can communicate on this issue in the comments below.
