Why can't older devices see 5 GHz Wi-Fi from the Asus RT-AC58U router?

Hello! I bought a new ASUS dual-band router with external antennas and its old devices of 2014 in the 5 GHz range. do not see! Only new! And the old ones only work in 2.4 GHz mode! What can be done so that they can see it and work in it! There, probably, the channels are not so crowded, and it seems to be more powerful. Thanks!

Answer

Hello! Everything is very simple. Old devices (more precisely, built-in Wi-Fi modules) do not support a Wi-Fi network at a frequency of 5 GHz at the hardware level. They simply cannot see it, since the modules do not support this range.

There is nothing to be done here. True, if under "old devices" you have a laptop or a PC, then you can buy external USB Wi-Fi adapters that support 5 GHz and the 802.11ac standard. I wrote about such adapters here. And if, for example, your phone or tablet does not see the Wi-Fi network from Asus RT-AC58U at 5 GHz, then here you just have to measure and connect at 2.4 GHz, or buy new devices.

I also advise you to look at the characteristics of your devices on the Internet to make sure that they do not support the new Wi-Fi standard.

And another article on this topic: why a laptop, smartphone, or tablet does not see a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
