Windows could not automatically detect the proxy settings for this network

The number of different bugs in Windows is, of course, amazing. I have already written instructions with solutions for most of the popular errors that are related to connecting to the Internet. But as it turned out, I have not yet talked about the error "Windows could not automatically detect the proxy settings of this network". Therefore, I decided to prepare a small instruction with several solutions that will help get rid of this problem in Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7.

The very error with the text "Windows could not automatically detect the proxy settings of this network" can be seen by running the troubleshooting when there are problems with the Internet connection. When the connection is lost and a yellow exclamation mark appears next to the icon. There are also cases when this error appears at a time when the Internet via Wi-Fi or cable is working normally. It looks like this:

There are several tried and tested solutions that work on all versions of Windows. Now I will tell you about them.

But first:

  • Reboot your computer or laptop (just do a reboot). If the internet is connected via cable, disconnect the cable and reconnect it.
  • If the Internet is connected via a router, and you see an error with automatic proxy detection, then restart the router. Just turn off the power for about a minute and turn it back on.

Perhaps a simple reboot of the devices will fix the problem. If not, follow the instructions.

Proxy detection error solution in Windows 7 and Windows 8

I recommend doing a network settings reset first and then checking your proxy settings.

1Reset network settings... We need to run Command Prompt as administrator. To do this, in the "Start" menu, in the search bar, writecmd... In the search results, right-click on the command prompt and select "Run as administrator". In Windows 8, you can find and run it through search.

Then we copy, and in turn execute the following commands:

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset c: netshlog.txt

It should look like this:

Restart your computer or laptop and check if the problem is resolved. If that doesn't work, there is another way.

2Checking the proxy server settings... To do this, go to the control panel, switch the display of icons to "Large icons" and run "Educator Properties". In Windows 8, these settings can also be found by requesting "Browser options" (proxy server settings) through the search.

In the new window, click on the "Network Settings" button, and check that all the checkboxes except for "Automatic parameter detection" are unchecked. Like this:

If this does not help, then try to also uncheck the "Automatic detection of parameters" checkbox in the proxy settings (screenshot above).

I think, after running the diagnostics of Windows networks, the error will not appear.

Problem with automatic detection of proxy settings in Windows 10

To resolve this error in Windows 10, you can use the same tips that I wrote about above. But since the interface and settings in the top ten have changed slightly, all these actions can be performed in a different way.

1Network reset via parameters... Go to "Start" and open "Settings" (gear icon). Next, go to the "Network and Internet" section and on the "Status" tab click on "Reset network".

Then just click on "Reset Now".

I wrote more about this in a separate article: https://help-wifi.com/reshenie-problem-i-oshibok/sbros-nastroek-seti-v-windows-10/

2To check if there are unnecessary settings in proxy properties, you need to go to the parameters again, to the "Network and Internet" section to the "Proxies" tab. Check that everything is disabled there, except for one item. As in the screenshot:

If this does not help, you can also try disabling the "Detect parameters automatically" item. I saw information on the Internet that this can help get rid of the error "Windows could not automatically detect ...".

If you managed to solve this problem, then be sure to write in the comments which method helped you. Good luck!
