I decided to prepare a detailed guide for connecting and configuring the TP-Link TL-WR820N router. This router has only recently appeared on sale (at the time of this writing). If you read my TP-Link TL-WR820N review, you probably noticed that I liked the router. An excellent solution in terms of price / quality ratio. I am sure this model will be popular. This means that my instructions will also be popular and useful to many. I hope that in the comments the owners of this router will leave feedback, share useful information about this device, and ask questions.

Of course, the router comes with a quick setup guide. It shows how to connect the router and go to the settings. And also answers to frequently asked questions are given. But the whole setup process is not shown there. Maybe this is not necessary, because after entering the page with the TL-WR820N settings, we are immediately greeted by a simple and understandable quick setup wizard, with which you can configure the router in just a few steps. But my instructions are based on real events, so they are more informative 🙂 Also, a new control panel is installed on this router, and this may cause additional inconvenience even for those users who previously configured TP-Link routers. Despite the fact that the new web interface is very simple and straightforward.

How to connect TP-Link TL-WR820N?

Connect the power supply to the router and plug it into a power outlet. The Wi-Fi indicator on the router should be green and the WAN (Internet) indicator should flash orange. The WAN LED immediately blinks orange because there is no cable connected to the WAN port. Connect the Internet (cable from your provider or modem) to the WAN port. Just watch carefully, don't mix up the ports.Further, depending on your Internet provider, there may be two options for the behavior of the WAN indicator:

  1. It will glow orange. This means that the router sees the cable, but you also need to configure the Internet connection. Internet via TL-WR820N will not work yet. But we can go into the router settings.
  2. After 10-30 seconds, the WAN indicator will turn green. This means that the router was able to automatically connect to the Internet. Most likely your ISP is using the Dynamic IP (DHCP) connection type without MAC address binding. Next, you will need to configure only a Wi-Fi network. Since the Internet is already working through the router.

We need to connect to TP-Link TL-WR820N from some device in order to configure through the browser. It is best to use a computer or laptop for this and connect via cable.

Let me remind you that after connecting, the computer may have the status "No Internet access" (limited). If it is not possible to connect via cable (for example, you have a laptop without a LAN port, it does not work, or you will configure from a phone / tablet), then you can establish a wireless connection. Just connect to the router's Wi-Fi network. The factory network name (SSID) can be viewed on the bottom of the router. By default, the network is open (connection without a password).

Perhaps you, or someone else, has already configured the router and a password for Wi-Fi is set there, on the settings page, or some other parameters that we do not need are set that may interfere with the setup process. In this case, you need to do a factory reset.

To restore factory settings on the TL-WR820N (reset), you need to turn on the router and hold down the WPS / Reset button for 8-10 seconds.

All three lights should come on and off. Release the button and wait for the router to boot up.

Let's go directly to the setup.

TP-Link TL-WR820N Quick Setup

You can access the router settings via an Internet browser. Launch any browser (preferably standard), in the address bar, type the addresshttp://tplinkwifi.net and go over it. If it does not work, then look at the articles: how to go to tplinkwifi.net or how to open the TP-Link router settings. You can also use the standard IP address 192.168.0.1 to enter the TL-WR820N settings.

The router will immediately prompt us to set a password to enter (to protect the settings). You need to come up with a password and enter it 2 times in the appropriate fields. Write down your password. If you forget it, you will have to do a Reset to get into the web interface.

The Quick Setup Wizard starts immediately. He will help us quickly set the required parameters. Of course, you can close it (by clicking on the "Close" button), but I do not advise you to do this. Also in the upper right corner you can change the language of the control panel.

At the first stage, you can try to select your country, city, Internet provider and connection type. If you do not find the desired settings, then check the box next to "I did not find suitable settings."

We select the type of Internet connection. It all depends on your internet service provider. If you don't know which one to choose, check with the provider's support.

If you are connected via PPPoE, PPTP, or L2TP, then on the next page you will need to specify your username and password. And also the server address (for PPTP and L2TP). All this data for connection is provided by your Internet provider.

If "Dynamic IP", then you do not need to enter anything. The router will offer to set up IPTV. If your provider provides digital TV service, you can set the required parameters. You can select a country for automatic configuration, configure a bridge (specify the LAN port (1, or both) where the IPTV set-top box will be connected), or register all the settings manually (VLAN ID). You can read more about setting up IPTV on TP-Link TL-WR820N in the article Setting up IPTV on TP-Link routers.

The next step is to configure your wireless network. Here you just need to change the factory name of the Wi-Fi network (SSID) and come up with a password for Wi-Fi. I also advise you to write down this password. So that later you do not have to recover the password for your Wi-Fi network.

Click on the checkbox to complete the setup and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network (with a new name and password). If you originally connected via Wi-Fi, and not via cable.

The control panel should open automatically (in the window where we performed the configuration). If it does not open, just go to the tplinkwifi.net page (you may be prompted for the password that we set at the very beginning) again. Make sure you are connected to a router.

The Device tab will display a list of devices connected to the TL-WR820N.

If necessary, you can:

  1. Block the device (after which it will be displayed on the "Blocked devices" tab, where you can unblock it).
  2. Limit outbound and outbound speed for a specific device.

On the "Network" tab, you can change the basic settings of the Internet connection.

Or change the basic Wi-Fi settings in the "Wireless Mode" section.

Well, and the section "Additional settings" with many additional settings. For example, you can find advanced WAN settings there.

You can set up a guest Wi-Fi network. There you can also configure the speed limit for the guest network. And even create a schedule for the guest Wi-Fi network on the TL-WR820N.

In the "System Tools" section, for example, you can update the TP-Link TL-WR820N firmware. To do this, download the new firmware version from the TP-Link website strictly for this model and hardware version (which is indicated on the sticker on the bottom of the router), and update it on the "Firmware update" tab.

I think there is no need to go through every page of the web interface. It is very easy to understand the settings. Each page has a button (?)by clicking on which a window with a description of the settings will appear (help will open).

If you can't configure some function, or you have any other questions related to this router, then you can always ask me a question in the comments. Good luck!
