Hello! I looked on the Internet for articles on setting up the repeater mode on Asus routers, and did not find a single detailed, correct article that would describe all the nuances. I decided to prepare my own instructions, in which, using a real example, show the process of setting up an Asus router as a repeater. In my case, we will use the Asus RT-N12 + router to expand the Wi-Fi network with a second router. We will strengthen it.

The Wi-Fi network in my house is distributed by a Tp-Link router. But, it doesn't matter, the main router can be of any company: D-Link, Tenda, Asus, etc. Well, I think this instruction is suitable for all Asus: rt-n10, rt-n12, rt-g32, etc. etc.

What is it for, and what is the repeater mode?

To begin with, a repeater is a special device that is used to increase the range of the main network. This I think is understandable. You installed a router, but the Wi-Fi network does not catch all over the house, the signal is bad. We put a repeater, and it strengthens the network. Modern routers can work in repeater mode. That is, to strengthen existing networks. Here's how to set up an Asus router in repeater mode, and now we'll figure it out. I took the scheme of work from the settings panel:

By the way, the Wi-Fi network will remain alone (which is currently working for you), the Asus router will simply copy the network settings. And the devices that you connect to your Wi-Fi network will automatically switch between the main router and Asus in repeater mode. Internet over a network cable from a repeater will also work.

I configured everything, checked and tested everything, everything works stably. The setup is also not difficult. Follow the instructions and you will succeed.

Setting up the Wi-Fi network repeater mode on Asus routers

First of all, you need to change the operating mode of the router. This can be done in the control panel of the router. Connect to your Asus, and navigate to 192.168.1.1 in your browser. Enter the username and password - admin and admin (if you have not changed them). If anything, see the detailed instructions for logging into 192.168.1.1.

In the settings go to the tab Administration - Working hours... We put the switch near Repeater mode and click on the button Save.

A window with a list of available Wi-Fi networks will appear. Click on your network that you want to expand.

Enter the password for your Wi-Fi network and click the button Connection.

Leave a check mark next to the item Use default settings, and click on the button Apply.

We are waiting for the connection process to complete.

At the end, the following window should appear:

By the way, yes, check if the Internet cable is connected to the WAN port of the router. Regarding changing the SSID, it doesn't matter. But now we will analyze the issue with the IP-address of the router in more detail. In principle, everything is already working. Our Asus relays the network. You may notice that there is only one network left with the name of the master router. Your devices will now connect to the network with a stronger signal.

You can put the repeater in a room where the mains signal is still there but is weak. Make sure that the signal is sufficient, otherwise the repeater will not be able to connect to the network and amplify it. After turning off / on the repeater, the network extension will turn on automatically. All connected devices will be on the same network.

How to enter the settings of Asus, which works as a repeater?

When the router is in Repeater mode, settings at 192.168.1.1 will be unavailable... This was written in the window during the setup process.

This is because the main router automatically assigns an IP address to the repeater. There are three ways to enter the control panel of our repeater:

  1. Type the address in the browser address barrouter.asus.com and go through it. You will see the Asus page, which will search for the IP address of our router. According to the idea, a result should appear, and a page with settings should open. Maybe it works. But, the service could not identify my Asus RT-N12 +. Perhaps you will succeed.
  2. Asus has created a special "Discovery" utility that detects the repeater's IP address. It works great. Download it (you can use this link), install it, and run it. Click the button Search... Our router should appear in the list. Select it and click on Configuration... The settings page will open immediately in the browser.
If you have any problems, then turn off your antivirus, or firewall. They can block searches.
  3. Well, the third way is to go to the settings of the main router, about the tab List of clients, find our repeater there and see its IP-address (by which to open the settings page). For example, on TP-link this information can be viewed on the DHCP - DHCP Clients List tab.

I hope one of the options worked for you.

How to turn off the "repeater" and return the router to normal operation?

If you need a router to use it for its intended purpose, then it is enough in the settings, on the same tabAdministration select operating modeWireless router (default), and press the button Save.

A window will appear in which you will need to specify the name of the new Wi-Fi network and the password.

The router will reboot. The settings can already be accessed at the standard address 192.168.1.1.

If you did not succeed in setting the normal operation mode of the router in this way, or you cannot enter the settings, then you can reset the settings according to this instruction.

Well, that's all the settings. It seems to have missed nothing. Leave all questions, advice, feedback, etc. in the comments to this article.
