Hello! When I write in some instructions that I need to go into the router's settings, I try to describe in detail the process itself, how to enter the control panel in order to perform some settings there. In most cases, this does not cause any difficulties. But it often happens that we just forgot the password, and there are many questions about how to get into the settings in this case.

The very question of entering the router settings, if you forgot your password, is not very clear. Because the router has at least two passwords. And it is not clear which of them you forgot, and what is the problem specifically in your case.

  • The password used to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
  • And the password that you need to specify to enter the settings of the router. Most often, it is this password that is changed, and it is successfully forgotten. It is clear that until we enter the correct password, we will not get into the router settings. Well, the factory password is not suitable (which is usually admin), since we have changed it.

These are the problems you may encounter while logging into the router's control panel. Now we will consider a solution based on your case, consider both options.

If you have forgotten your Wi-Fi password and cannot enter the router settings

This is the first option in which we do not remember the password from our Wi-Fi network. And we may not be able to connect to it. And we need to go into the settings of the router in order to see or change the password.

In this case, everything is very simple:

  • Firstly, we have very detailed instructions on what to do if you forgot your Wi-Fi password. You can view the password on the computer (if any), just remember it. Connect to the wireless network and go to the control panel.
  • Secondly, you can go to the router settings from the device that is currently connected to your Wi-Fi. And already in the settings of the router, see the forgotten password, or change it.
  • Thirdly, we connect to the router via a network cable, and go to the control panel. In this case, we will not need a password from Wi-Fi at all. If you do not know how to connect to the router via cable, then here is a detailed instruction on the example of TP-LINK.

I think we sorted out this problem.

If you forgot the password from entering the settings of the router

This happens most often. Each router's control panel is password protected. There you need to specify a username and password. This is necessary to protect the settings so that everyone who connects to your network cannot access them.

If the router is new, not yet configured, then the default password and username are used. In most cases, these are admin and admin. Or there is no protection at all. We set or change this password already in the process of configuring the router. I always advise you to do this in my instructions. And there is even a separate article on changing / setting the admin password.

So, we changed this password, set up the router, and forgot it. And then we urgently needed to go into the settings, and we do not remember the password. On the authorization page, we indicate some kind of username and password, but nothing happens, the page simply reloads, or we get a message that the password is incorrect.

That's all, we can't get into the settings. If you cannot remember this data, and perhaps you did not change the password, then you will have to reset the router settings. After that, we will go to the control panel using the factory settings, which is indicated on the bottom of the router, on the sticker.

What would reset settings, you need to hold down the button for about 10 seconds, which is usually signed as: RESET, WPS / RESET, Sros, Default. It all depends on the model of your router. The button can be recessed into the body, and you need to press it with something sharp. The router must be powered on. This button looks something like this:

After returning to the factory settings, to enter the control panel, use the data indicated on the router itself. If the factory data is not indicated there, then there is no password by default.

If you have any difficulties with resetting the settings, then on our website there are detailed instructions for most manufacturers. If you don't find it, write in the comments, I'll give you a link.

If something did not work out, just write, we will try to solve your problem.
