One of the most common problems that probably all users of wireless networks face is when there is no Internet connection via Wi-Fi. Laptop, PC, smartphone, tablet, TV, etc. are connected to the Wi-Fi network, but the Internet does not work. Sound familiar? The problem is, of course, very ambiguous, since the reason can be anything, and, accordingly, the solutions can be very different.

In this case, the culprit may be the access point (the router itself, the Internet service provider), or the client (the device you are connecting). Any device can be a client. I will first look at a few universal solutions, which are mainly related to finding the cause, checking the router, and solving the problem on the access point side. Also, we will separately consider the problem with connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi on laptops (Windows), as well as on phones and tablets (Android, iOS).

Regarding the symptoms of this problem, and what it looks like, everything is very simple here. The device itself connects to the Wi-Fi network without problems, but there is no Internet connection. Depending on the device and operating system, there may be different errors and icons next to the icons that indicate the connection status. For example, on some Android devices, the Wi-Fi connection icon may be grayed out. Or a message that the Internet is not working. On computers with Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7 installed, a yellow exclamation mark will appear next to the connection icon. And there will be a message "No Internet access", "Limited", or "No Internet connection, secure". In any case, in browsers, when trying to open a site, there will be an error. Programs and various services that need access to the network will not work.

No internet connection via Wi-Fi router

A few important points:

  • If you were connected to some free, open Wi-Fi network, or to a closed one, but this network is not yours and the Internet suddenly stopped working, then most likely in this case the problem is on the side of the access point itself. Perhaps there is some kind of failure, the Internet was not paid for, or you were simply blocked. Connect to a different network, or restart your device and try again later.
  • If the network is yours, then first you need to reboot the router. Perhaps this will solve the problem with Internet access. Just unplug the router for a minute and plug it back in.
  • If you are connecting through your router, and the Internet connection is lost on all devices, then you need to make sure that there are no problems on the side of the provider. Perhaps they have some kind of technical problem, or you simply did not pay for the Internet. Call support and check if there are any problems. You can connect the cable directly to the computer and try to connect to the Internet.
  • Check the cable connections to the router. Especially the cable from the provider, which connects to the WAN port. Pay attention to the internet indicator on the router. It should blink. On newer models from TP-Link, for example, when the router loses connection, the indicator lights up orange.

In more detail on this topic, I wrote in the article: the router does not distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi.

Important! In the event that the connection to the Internet via a Wi-Fi network is lost simultaneously on all devices that are connected to the same network, then the problem is precisely with the router or with the provider.

Above I described one side of this problem - the router and the ISP. Below we will consider possible problems and solutions on the client side. Devices on which you observe no internet connection. Given that there is a connection to a Wi-Fi network, and the Internet from this network works on other devices.

The problem is on the laptop. Windows 10, 8, 7

If possible, connect your laptop or PC to another Wi-Fi network. See if there will be Internet access. It's just that when a yellow icon with an exclamation mark appears on the computer near the Wi-Fi icon, then there may already be anything. There is no definite reason and solution.

In Windows 10 and 8, the connection status will be "Limited", and on Windows 7, you will see "No Internet access".

I think there is no point in writing about solutions again. For this error, I have already prepared two large and detailed instructions with many solutions. Just giving links.

One of these articles should help you solve your problem. Check IP and DNS settings, disable antivirus, enable FIPS compatibility mode.

If there is no connection on your phone or tablet. Android and iOS

From my own experience, I can say that on Apple devices, on the iPhone and iPad, this problem occurs very rarely. I have not even seen such cases. If your smartphone or tablet from Apple is connected to a Wi-Fi network, but the Internet does not work, then the reason is most likely on the side of the router or provider. IPhones and iPads often have a problem when they do not see Wi-Fi networks at all, I wrote about this here.

As for smartphones and tablets on Android, then there is such a problem. Even if other devices have Internet access, Android may not have it. This is most often accompanied by a gray Wi-Fi icon. I wrote in great detail about this problem in a separate article: why does Wi-Fi light up gray instead of blue on an Android smartphone or tablet.

The most common cause is proxy settings, time and date, applications like "Freedom", and even viruses. I also wrote about this in the article: why the Internet via Wi-Fi does not work on an Android tablet or smartphone.

Summing up, I can say that access to the Internet is most often absent due to some problems with the router, or the Internet itself. Do not forget that the provider may also have technical problems. The very fact of connecting to a Wi-Fi network does not mean that there is an Internet connection.
