Devices do not connect to hotspot in Windows 10. Obtaining an IP address

Already for about a week, people leave a lot of comments on the problem when devices do not connect to the access point running on a laptop to articles on setting up an access point in Windows 10. There is simply an endless receipt of an IP address, authentication, or an error that it is impossible to connect to this Wi-Fi network. Such a problem, this is certainly not news, but as far as I understand, after the last update of Windows 10, a lot of users have encountered this error. Many people write that everything worked fine before the update.

Interestingly, the problem with connecting devices appears both when distributing Wi-Fi through the command line, and through the "Mobile hotspot" that appeared in Windows 10 after installing a large update.

In any case, if you have Windows 10, you distributed the Internet via Wi-Fi from a laptop, and the devices do not connect to the access point (it is impossible to connect, or obtaining an IP address), then you have come to the address. Now we will try to find out what the problem might be. In the comments to other articles, I have already left a few tips, which I will also add to this article. I myself have not encountered this problem. Now I was sitting, trying different options with launching a mobile access point, but my devices connected without problems. I did not see an error. Tried it on two different computers with the latest version of Windows 10. Wi-Fi adapters are different.

Solving problems with connecting to Wi-Fi, which the laptop distributes

And so, if you run an access point on your laptop (Windows 10), and when you try to connect a phone, tablet, or another laptop to it, you see the error "Obtaining an IP address ...", "Authentication", "Unable to connect to the network ", etc., then try the following guidelines.

1Yes, I know that it is unlikely, but the antivirus, if you have one, is better to disable. It will be enough to disable the firewall built into the antivirus. You can also disable the built-in firewall in Windows 10. Look and think if you have any other programs that could block the connection of devices.

2 Make sure you have opened Internet sharing in the properties of your Internet connection. This is a very important point, which I wrote about in detail in the articles on configuring the access point. I wrote about the problems that can be encountered when opening public access here.

If general access to the Internet is not open, then in the properties of the running connection, there will be "IPv4 connection" - "Without access to the network", or "Without access to the Internet".

So be sure to check your sharing settings, and make sure that "Public" is written next to the connection through which you get the Internet.

3Check the IP settings for "Local Area Connection *". Right-click on the connection that appeared after launching the access point (it is with an asterisk and a number), and select "Properties". Then, highlight "IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" and click on the "Properties" button. If some IPs are already set there, and the devices do not connect to the running Wi-Fi network, then set the automatic obtaining of IP and DNS. Restart your laptop, start up the network, check your sharing settings, and try to connect.

Or vice versa, if there will be automatic receipt of addresses, and there is a problem with the connection, then try to register the addresses manually. Like the screenshot below. You can try not to register DNS. Main IP address and Subnet mask.

4Try deleting your internet connection (if you have PPPoE, high speed) and re-creating it. Then, in the properties of this connection, reopen the Internet sharing for the started connection. You do not need to manually register any addresses.

5Check if your services are running: WLAN Auto Config Service, Routing, and Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). By default, these services start automatically. But it may be that for some reason they are stopped. You can check them in "Control Panel" - "Administrative Tools" - "Services".

6 Reset TCP / IP and DNS settings. Honestly, I don't know if this will help, but I think that as a last resort, you can try. Run Command Prompt as administrator (by right-clicking on the start menu). Run two commands in turn:

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset c: resetlog.txt

After that, restart your computer, and start the distribution of the Wi-Fi network again, open the general access.

Update:

I noticed that in some cases resetting the network helps. How to do it, I wrote in the article: reset network settings in Windows 10.

7Gleb shared his solution in the comments to another article. He just reinstalled Windows 10. After that, both Wi-Fi and the access point work perfectly and stably through the Mobile Hotspot. If reinstalling Windows is easy for you, why not give it a try.

The article will be updated.

Request. If you know of any other solutions, or were able to get rid of the connection problem using one of the methods described above, then write about it in the comments. The information will be useful to many. Thanks!
