The router is in repeater mode.

Who are the "clients", why are there more of them than I have connected and why is their number changing?

Answer:

It doesn't matter what mode the router is in. Clients are devices that are connected to the router. All information on clients is also displayed there.

Why do you have more clients displayed than connected devices: information is displayed there with a delay, it is not always up-to-date. It is already necessary to look at which devices are superfluous. All devices can be verified by MAC addresses.

Is the Wi-Fi network password protected? Maybe the neighbors are connected. You can try changing the master router password and re-configure your Asus RT-N15U in repeater mode.

The number of clients changes because some devices are simply turned off. Even some mobile devices when not in use.

If anything, you can still block unnecessary (in your opinion) devices according to this instruction.
