Good afternoon! I have a question that just annoys me, my laptop Asus g73jw bought an expensive ASUS RT-AC68U router to replace ASUS RT N12, just to increase the speed of WiFi distribution. And what my surprise was that the speed of wi-fi on a laptop is the same, with a new router, with an old one !!! (approximately 40 Mbit / s at a speed of 100 MB / s from the provider). Maybe I'm doing something wrong? But I already want to take the expensive router to the store, tk. I see no point, even with 5G. Please give some good advice about the ASUS RT-AC68U router and the speed of wi-fi distribution !!!! Yes, according to your articles, I made all kinds of router settings, but the speed does not change. If this is not a good router, then please advise what is the normal router that does not cut the speed !?

Answer

Good afternoon. I understood your question and problem. And I think that the router in this situation has nothing to do with it. In principle, any router will cut the speed over WiFi, and 100 Mbps is unlikely to be squeezed out. Even through such an expensive router like ASUS RT-AC68U. And the speed of 40 Mbit / s over WiFi network is not very small. Perhaps, in your conditions (signal level, interference, etc.) this is the maximum speed at 2.4 GHz. Since your laptop Asus G73JW, you could not connect at 5 GHz. His WiFi module simply does not support this frequency and the 802.11ac standard.

I think if you check the WiFi speed from some other device, even from a smartphone or tablet, then it will be higher than 40 Mbit / s. Check at 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The whole problem (if you can call it that) is in the outdated WiFi adapter of the laptop. For higher speed, you need to connect to a router at a frequency of 5 GHz. And for 2.4 GHz and 802.11n, this speed can simply be maximum. Which is good enough.

Try to connect and check the speed from some new device at 5 GHz. If the speed is higher, you can buy a new USB WiFi adapter with support for 5 GHz and 802.11ac standard for your ASUS laptop.
