The Internet works only via a cable on a computer, but not via Wi-Fi via a router

Hello. Recently I was faced with the fact that there is no Internet in the house, the indicator on the router was red, which usually happens when there is no Internet, although it was paid the day before. I called the service of the Internet provider, to find out why there is no network, they said to restart the router, it did not help, they promised to call the master, he usually does not enter the house, but works with wires on the street.

So I didn't even know whether he came or not, but after a couple of hours I noticed that the indicator on the router turned green and I decided to check. My phone connected to it, but unfortunately there is no Internet. And on the computer it shows that there is no Internet. Very strange. I pulled out the wire, which is "responsible" for the Internet, and connected it to the computer system unit and, as it turned out, the Internet is only on the computer.

I tried to reset the router to factory settings, nothing helps. At the same time, it is very strange that if you remove the Internet wire from the router, but still leave it turned on on the phone, it shows that there is an available Wi-Fi network to which you can connect by specifying your password, but there is still no Internet.

All this is confusing, in short, I will say that the Internet is only on the computer, without the router working, and wi-fi as such is there when the router is turned on, but the computer does not connect to it, and the phone connects, but there is still no Internet. I think the problem is in the router, or the wizard reconfigured something that I can't figure out. Sorry, I can't write briefly. Thanks in advance, I hope you will help me, otherwise I don't even know how to explain my problem to the master.

Answer

Hello. Anna, in order to unravel your current situation a little, I will explain something.

The router always distributes the Wi-Fi network immediately after turning it on. Even when the Internet is not connected to it, or the connection to the provider is not configured. But this WI-FI network without internet access. As in your case. There is nothing strange about this. It should be so.

The indicator on the router glows red when there is no internet connection. The router cannot connect to the ISP. Due to settings, problems with the provider, hardware failures, cable, etc. You did not write the manufacturer and model, but most likely you have a TP-Link router. I already wrote about this: why on the TP-Link router the Internet indicator (WAN) is orange. Until the WAN (Internet) indicator is on / blinking green, the Internet on the devices will not work.

If your Internet works through a cable and only on a computer with a direct connection, not through a router, then the problem is unlikely on the side of the provider. It means most likely something with a router. Either in the settings, or it is a breakdown of the hardware itself. Therefore, the Internet is only on the computer.

You wrote that you tried to reset the router settings. Try again, according to the instructions: how to perform a full reset on a Tp-Link router.

But after restoring the factory settings, the most important thing is to re-configure and correctly configure the router to connect to the provider. Check with your provider for the type of connection and all settings. There is no need to configure anything (Wi-Fi network does not count) only in one case - when the "Dynamic IP" connection type is used without binding by MAC address. If the settings on the router are incorrect, then it will not be able to connect to the Internet. And the Internet via Wi-Fi will not work. Well, by cable from the router.

If everything is in order with the settings, but the Internet does not work through the router, then I see only two options: call specialists, let them look for a reason, or try to change the router.
