Why does D-Link DIR-300 cut speed and work unstable?

Hello. I have had a D-Link DIR-300 router for a hundred years and I have suffered with it more than once. Previously, I had to reinstall it through an operator (tormenting someone who does not understand), then I gave it to some masters, somehow they reflashed it and there were no more strong rallies, but now a day, a hundred times or a week, I never have to pull it out of the socket, because on the phone starts to write that the password is not correct ...

The question is, I checked the speed on the phone via Wi-Fi: incoming connection 33.61 Mbit / s = 4.20 Mbyte / s, outgoing connection 51.02 Mbit / s = 6.38 Mbyte / s. A tariff called "Internet 60" is up to 58.59 Mbit / s. Is my old DIR-300 really bad? Does it cut speed? Please don't ignore, you'd better be humorous, because I don't understand at all ... thanks for earlier.

Answer

Hello. There is no reason to ignore your question, you described everything more or less normally. And there is no humor. True, I don't really understand what answer you wanted to see. Since your question is more rhetorical, and it is impossible to give a specific answer to it. Well, okay, let's try to deal with your D-Link DIR-300, which is already a hundred years old 🙂

I don’t know how many years the D-Link DIR-300 has been running for you (I think it’s definitely not a hundred), but as a rule, over time, the router hardware "wears out" and the router starts to work unstable. Constantly freezes, connection drops, ping drops, etc. Low-end models, such as DIR-300, suffer first of all. Since the iron in them is cheaper and of lower quality. Under the word iron, I will introduce the board itself in the router and the power supply. It is not uncommon for problems precisely because of the power supply, which cannot deliver the required voltage and from this the router starts to be capricious. This is to the first part of your question, where you wrote that you often have to reboot the D-Link DIR-300, as it freezes. The error "password is not correct" may also be due to problems with the router. How do other devices work at this moment?

Yes, your DIR-300 cuts speed (like other routers). If I hadn't cut it, I would have given out those 60 Mbit / s (for some reason you wrote 58.59 Mbit / s), which the provider promises. The first step is to check if the provider is issuing these 60 Mbit / s. You need to connect the Internet without a router, directly to your computer and check the speed. It may turn out that the router has nothing to do with it. I assume that you have already done this and you managed to squeeze out 58 Mbit / s.

But 33 Mbit / s over Wi-Fi for the D-Link DIR-300, which is no longer new, is not a bad result. It is important to remember here that the speed over a Wi-Fi network strongly depends on various factors (interference, signal strength, type of connection to the provider, load on the router, etc.) and on the device itself on which you measure the speed of the Internet. In your case, this is a telephone. Perhaps the speed will be higher on another device, or vice versa - lower. It may be that this is the maximum speed that can be obtained from these devices (router / smartphone) in the conditions in which they are and with this Internet connection.

It's not a fact that after replacing the router, the speed will be higher. It could be even worse, or it could be all 60 Mbps. Once I already wrote an article: a router that does not cut the speed over Wi-Fi and gives 100 Mbit / s or more. You can read it if you're interested.

Another useful article that may be useful to you: how to increase the speed of the Internet over Wi-Fi through a router.

You can also check if the site has a new firmware for your DIR-300. If so, update it.
