DHCP is not enabled on the network adapter "Wireless Network", "Ethernet", "Local Area Connection"

The most popular problem when connecting a PC or laptop to the Internet is when everything seems to be connected, but the Internet does not work. In this case, there can be many different symptoms, causes, and solutions. The first step is to find out what is the reason. I recommend focusing on errors that are displayed in Windows. Few people immediately start diagnosing problems. And in vain, because if the diagnostic and troubleshooting tool itself cannot fix everything, then at least it will tell us about the error and tell us where and how to look for the problem. As in our case with the error "DHCP is not enabled on the network adapter ...", which can be seen in Windows 10, Windows 7, etc.

When, after connecting a cable, or after connecting to a Wi-Fi network (or trying to connect), you see the error "Unidentified network", "No Internet connection", "No connection. You are not connected to any network", "Without access to Internet ", etc., then run troubleshooting.

It is possible that during the diagnostics process the error "DHCP is not enabled on the wireless network adapter" (when connected via Wi-Fi) will appear:

Or "DHCP is not enabled on the Ethernet network adapter" (this is in Windows 10, when connected to the Internet using a network cable). In Windows 7, the adapter will be listed as Local Area Connection, or Wireless Network Connection.

In this case, in the system itself (in my case, in Windows 10), the status of the network connection will look something like this (it may differ slightly depending on the connection method):

If everything is about the same for you, then you've come to the right place. Now I will show you how you can solve this problem. But first, a few words about why this error appears and why this DHCP is not enabled on the network adapter.

In short, DHCP allows Windows to automatically obtain IP addresses from your router or your ISP's hardware. And this error appears when DHCP cannot automatically obtain addresses, or cannot obtain those addresses that are manually registered. Most often this happens after the user himself, or some software, changes the DHCP settings in the properties of the adapter "Wireless network", or "Ethernet". This is in Windows 10. And in Windows 7, these are the Wireless Network Connection and Local Area Connection adapters.

How do I fix the "DHCP is not enabled on the network adapter ..." error in Windows 10?

For Windows 8 and Windows 7, these guidelines should also work. Some menu items and settings may differ slightly. I will show everything using Windows 10 as an example.

Solution # 1: through Windows network diagnostics

If you are lucky, immediately after starting the diagnostic tool, the following message will appear: "Automatically update network settings. The system supports automatic network settings." Don't hesitate to click on "Apply this fix".

Or after a problem is found, for example, "DHCP is not enabled on the wireless network adapter" click on "Try to restore as administrator".

If the system is able to automatically solve this problem, then the message "Fixed" will appear opposite the detected problem and the Internet will work.

If it does not work the first time, then restart the computer and run the troubleshooting again.

Solution # 2: check DHCP settings manually

The first thing we need to do is open the Network Connections window. This can be done using the command ncpa.cpl... Press the key combination Win + R, copy this command in the "Open" field and click "Ok".

Then you need to right-click and open the "Properties" of the adapter, when connected through which you got this error. In the case of Windows 10: "Ethernet" is a cable connection, and "Wireless" is a Wi-Fi connection.

Next, select the "IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" protocol and click on the "Properties" button. We set the automatic receipt of IP and DNS addresses, as shown in the screenshot below and click "Ok".

If the Internet connection does not appear and the "Unidentified network" status near the adapter does not disappear, then make sure that you have changed the settings of the exact adapter through which you are connecting. Also restart your computer.

Above, I showed two main solutions that most often manage to get rid of this error. If you fail, see other solutions.

Additional solutions and tips

  1. Reset network settings. Here instructions are for Windows 10, and here for Windows 7 and Windows 8.
  2. If the connection is via a router, it will reboot it. Check if the Internet works on other devices (through the same router). To find out what is the reason, you can read the article The router has stopped distributing the Internet. How to find the cause and eliminate it.
  3. If the cable to the computer is connected directly from the ISP, then disconnect it and reconnect it. Reboot your computer. It is also advisable to call the provider's support and find out if there are any problems on their side. Or try to connect the Internet to another computer.
  4. Remember what you were doing on the computer before the "DHCP is not enabled on the network adapter" error appeared. Perhaps in this way it will be possible to find the cause and eliminate it. If before that you installed something or changed the settings, and do not know how to get everything back, write in the comments.
  5. Another similar error: The network adapter does not have valid IP settings. See if this is your case.
  6. Try to register the IP settings manually. I showed you how to do this in this article.
  7. Try to stop the antivirus completely just in case. If it is installed on your computer.
  8. It is advisable to reinstall the network adapter. To do this, go to the device manager and remove the network card or Wi-Fi adapter (depending on which adapter you are having problems with).
After uninstalling and restarting your computer, you may need to reinstall the driver. Here you may find the instructions for installing the driver for the network card and the instructions for installing (updating) the Wi-Fi adapter driver useful.
  9. It will not be superfluous to check your computer for all sorts of viruses and malware using special antivirus utilities. You can use AdwCleaner, Dr.Web CureIt !, Kaspersky AVP Tool, CrystalSecurity, AVZ and others.

You can always write to me in the comments below. What for? For example, to tell in detail about your problem (on the topic of this article). Perhaps I will be able to notice what you did not notice and give you some kind of solution. Or you can share your solution if it is not in the article. Or just write how you managed to get rid of the DHCP disabled error on the network adapter.
