After I created a page with reviews, characteristics and a small review of the Linksys E1200 router (by the way, leave your reviews), I still could not find the time to write detailed instructions on how to configure the Linksys E1200. But I decided that I needed to do it, otherwise the E1200 model seems to be popular now, which means that the setup instructions will be useful to many. I will try to explain everything in simple language, and of course with pictures. As you like :)

Linksys E1200 - a router made exclusively for home use and medium loads. This can be understood by looking at its price and characteristics. Wi-Fi coverage is not great, it should be enough for two rooms. The Wi-Fi network seems to be stable, it looks just fine and is made of high-quality plastic. Linksys E1200 is suitable for connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi of your mobile devices, laptops, and if necessary, stationary computers, TVs and other devices via a network cable. Setting up the Linksys E1200 isn't difficult, and that's what we're going to do now.

By the way, I will configure it through the control panel (which we will enter through the browser). This router comes with a disk with a program that we run on the computer and configure our Linksys step by step. Yes, the thing is, in principle, useful and simple, I will definitely write a separate article on setting up Linksys routers using the disk that comes with the kit. But, in this article I will show the configuration through the browser. Why? I think this method is more versatile. If you want to set up Linksys from a tablet, phone, or laptop that doesn't have an optical drive, then the disc simply won't start. And according to this article, you can set all the settings even from a mobile device. By connecting via Wi-Fi. Actually, nothing is complicated. The main thing is that you need to find out all the parameters for connecting to the Internet that your Internet provider uses (I will write about this in more detail below).

We will configure it according to the following scheme:

  1. We will reset the router settings (if it is new, from the store, then you can not do it)
  2. Let's connect to our Linksys E1200 via a network cable, or via Wi-Fi. It already depends on which device we will be configuring the router from.
  3. Let's go to the control panel
  4. Let's configure the router to work with an Internet provider. Select the type of connection and set the required WAN parameters
  5. Change (set) the password for the Wi-Fi network and change the name of the wireless network to Linksys E1200
  6. Change the password to access the control panel

If someone has already tried to configure your router (or you yourself have already tried to do something), then unnecessary settings may remain in it, which may interfere with us. Therefore, do a factory reset on the Linksys E1200.

At the bottom of the device there is a Reset button, which we press with something sharp and hold approximately 10 Seconds... Then release the button and wait for the router to start up. The settings will be reset to factory defaults.

If you have problems, see the detailed instructions for resetting the settings.

How do I connect the Linksys E1200?

We take out our router, connect the power adapter to it, and plug this case into an outlet. On the router, the indicator on the back panel should light up. Further, if you will configure from a computer or laptop via a network cable, then we take the cable that comes with it and connect our computer to the router with it. We connect one cable connector to the router in the LAN connector (there are 4 LAN connectors, under them a blue line, connect to any one), and the second to the computer's network connector.

Plug the cable from your ISP into the yellow WAN connector (yellow line under the connector).

If you want to configure via Wi-Fi, from a laptop, tablet, or other device, then connect it to the network that appears immediately after connecting the power to the router. The network will be called "Linksys (some numbers)".

Wi-Fi network by default without password. Therefore, the "Install a network?" Window should appear. You can just click on the link "Connect to the network without first installing and configuring it", or click Ok, and enter the PIN code that is indicated on the sticker on the bottom of the router.

You can see a more detailed article on connecting your computer to Wi-Fi. After connecting to the router, the Internet may not work. The connection status can be "Without Internet access" - this is normal. We have not yet configured our router. And if your Internet connection works right away through a router, then you can go to the settings to set a password for Wi-Fi and change the network name. You can skip the section with Internet settings on Linksys E1200. You most likely have a Dynamic IP connection type, everything worked by itself.

Go to the Linksys E1200 settings and configure the Internet (WAN)

Entering Linksys E1200 Settings

To get into the Linksys E1200 settings, launch any browser and type the address in the address bar 192.168.1.1... Go to this address, you should see a window like this:

Then a window will appear in which we put a tick next to the item "I am aware that my network ..." and press Proceed.

Then, you will be prompted for a username and password. We indicate admin and admin are standard.

The Control Panel for the Linksys E1200 router should open.

You can see a detailed article on entering the Linksys settings.

Setting up a connection with an Internet provider

Important! You need to find out what connection technology your ISP is using. Usually this: Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP andPPTP. And the necessary parameters, based on the type of connection, which will need to be set during the configuration process. This is necessary so that your router can connect to your ISP and access the Internet. If these parameters are set incorrectly, then the Internet via the router will not work. A Wi-Fi or cable connection will work, but without internet access.

During the configuration process, we will need to select one of the above connection technologies, and set the desired parameters (username, server, password, IP). Or some of that. For Dynamic IP technology only, you do not need to specify anything. It is enough to connect the Internet to the Linksys E1200 and it will immediately distribute it via Wi-Fi and cable. For more information on how to find out the connection technology, I wrote in the article: What type of connection should I specify when configuring the router ?.

Immediately after entering the control panel, a page will open where you can configure the router to work with your Internet provider. In the tab Customization - basic settings, you need to specify the type of connection your ISP is using. Usually, this is Dynamic IP, PPPoE (TTK, Rostelecom, Dom.ru), L2TP (Beeline), or PPTP.

Depending on which type of connection you choose, you will need to set additional parameters. Only if you have a Dynamic IP, in the settings it is Auto configuration - DHCP, you will not need to specify any additional parameters. The Internet should already work, and if not, then select Automatic configuration - DHCP and click on the button below Save settings, the Internet should work, you can go to other settings.

Configuring PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP, providers Beeline, Dom.ru, TTK, Rostelecom on Linksys E1200

If you use one of these technologies, then select it (as I showed above), and set the necessary parameters that your Internet provider must provide you. It can be: username, password, IP address, hostname. For example, PPPoE setup:

After configuring all the settings, do not forget to save them and reboot the router.

If you set everything correctly, then the Internet through the router should already work. If it works, then everything is ok, go back to the control panel and continue the configuration. If it does not work, then check the settings and specified parameters, as I showed above.

If you had a high-speed connection on your computer before installing the router, then after installing the router, you do not need it. It doesn't need to be launched. This connection will be automatically established by the router.

Setting (changing) a password on Wi-Fi

After the Internet through our Linksys is already working, the main thing we need to do is to secure the wireless network. So that no one can connect to it, since by default the network is without a password.

To do this, in the settings you need to go to the tab Wireless network - Wireless Security... In field Security Mode select "WPA2 / WPA mixed mode"... Create and set a password with at least 8 characters. It will be used to connect to your Wi-Fi. Write down your password so you don't forget it.

Then, save the settings by clicking on the button Save settings... The router will reboot. To reconnect to Wi-Fi, you need to re-establish the connection, but during the connection process, you will already have to specify the password that you just set.

Setting up Wi-Fi on Linksys E1200: changing the network name

I think you might want to change the default name for your wireless network. Now I will show you how to do it. After we changed the password, we connect again to the router, go to the settings and go to the tab Wireless network - Basic Wireless Settings... Selecting the setup mode "Manually", and the network operating mode needs to be specified Mixed... In field Network name (SSID) specify the name of your network that you want to use.

Then we leave all the default settings and click Save settings.

The router will reboot and a Wi-Fi network will appear already with your name. It looks like this for me:

We connect to it, and we can already use the Internet.

We protect the settings of the router, change the password

Remember, when you entered your Linksys E1200 settings, you entered the default admin password there. So, it needs to be changed so that everyone who will connect to your Wi-Fi cannot enter the settings of your router and change them.

Changing the password to access the control panel is quite simple. In the settings go to the Administration tab. In field "Router password" and "Re-enter for confirmation" provide a password that will protect your router. Click the button Save settingand.

Write down this password so that you don't forget it. If you forget, you will have to do a factory reset and configure everything again. Now, when entering the control panel, you will need to specify the username admin, and the password that you just set.

Afterword

That's it, your Linksys E1200 setup is complete. You can already use the router. If you have such a popular problem as "Without access to the Internet", when sites simply do not open, and everything works by cable without a router, then first check if this problem is observed when connecting other devices. If yes, then check the provider parameters in the router settings. Most likely, the connection type or other parameters are incorrectly specified.

We have just completed the basic configuration, which is sufficient for normal router use. How to forward a port, start a guest network, block computers, close access to sites, etc., I will write in separate articles, and links will appear here.

I tried to write as simple and understandable as possible, the article turned out to be long, but there was no other way. If something did not work out for you, ask questions in the comments, attach screenshots, I will try to give you some advice.
