The router does not distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi. What to do?

The problem, when the router does not want to distribute the Internet over a wireless Wi-Fi network, most often arises during the process of setting up the router. When you brought the router home, you seem to have already configured it, but then there is a problem with the distribution of Wi-Fi. Then the Wi-Fi network does not appear at all, then the network is there, but the Internet does not work, and a number of other similar problems. If you have already encountered such a problem, and your router also does not want to distribute the Internet, then now we will deal with this.

When they write that the router does not distribute the Internet, it is not very clear what exactly the problem is. Either the Wi-Fi network does not appear at all, the devices do not see it, or there is Wi-Fi, but the Internet does not work. You connect to the network, but the sites do not open. On a computer, this is most likely a "No Internet Access" error. As a rule, this problem is solved by checking the Wi-Fi settings on the router itself, and checking the parameters of the Internet connection. By the way, I often come across questions: "what to do, the router does not connect to the Internet?" This is my understanding of the problem with connecting the router to the provider, because of which, in fact, there is no distribution of the Internet, and the status "without access to the Internet."

I have already confused you :) now I will tell you in detail, and show you what settings to check on the router in such cases. Consider with you routers of the most popular manufacturers: Tp-Link (detailed article on solving the problem with Wi-Fi on Tp-Link), D-Link, Asus, ZyXEL, Tenda and Linksys. If you did not manage to configure the router yourself, or you configured it and it refuses to distribute the Internet, then there is no need to rush to call a specialist. Believe me, you can figure it out yourself. And I advise you to configure the router according to the instructions that you can find on our website. Or write in the comments, I will suggest an article for your model, if we have one.

Why is my router not sending out Wi-Fi signal? No wireless network

Let's first consider the case when you turned on your router and the Wi-Fi network did not appear, it simply does not exist. This problem does not happen often, but it does happen. If you have Wi-Fi, but the Internet does not work, then scroll down the page below, this is the second part of this article.

What to check first:

  • To get started, just reboot your router (unplug and power on) and your device you are connecting.
  • Many routers have a dedicated button to turn off Wi-Fi. This is a useful thing, but if you accidentally press it, then your router will not distribute a Wi-Fi network. Check on the case of your device. The button is often labeled "Wi-Fi", or just a network icon. It looks something like this:
Be sure to check these buttons if you have them.
  • Try connecting to your Wi-Fi from another device. There may be a problem in the device itself. For example, iPhone and iPad very often do not see Wi-Fi, due to problems with setting the network channel.
  • If you have a lot of wireless networks at home, then try to find a free channel and change it in the router settings. This helps a lot.
  • Alternatively, you can reset the settings on the router and configure it again.

You can also check if the broadcast of the Wi-Fi network is turned off in the settings of the router itself. To do this, you need to go to the settings of the router, and go to the tab where the wireless network parameters are set. For example, on Tp-Link routers:

This is the case on almost all routers. If, for example, Asus, or D-link does not distribute Wi-Fi, then look in the settings for the page with Wi-Fi settings, and check if the wireless module is turned off. I will not write in detail about each manufacturer, since it rarely happens that Wi-Fi is disabled in the settings. He himself simply cannot turn off.

If the router does not distribute the Internet: there is Wi-Fi, but the Internet does not work

This is a very popular problem, for the solution of which, I have already prepared a detailed article: without access to the Internet in Windows 7 when connected via a Wi-Fi network. In most cases, there are two reasons: the cable from the provider is incorrectly connected, or the Internet settings on the router are incorrectly set. He simply cannot connect to the ISP and get an internet connection. And if the router cannot connect to the Internet, then it cannot distribute it. Everything is logical 🙂

The Wi-Fi network will of course work, and you will be able to connect to it, but the Internet will not work. The computer will have the status "No Internet access", or "Limited" (On Windows 8 and Windows 10). And on mobile devices, sites simply won't open, programs won't work, etc.

What to do?

First of all, check if the cable from your ISP is properly connected to your router. It must be connected to the WAN connector:

Next, you need find out the type of connection (see this article) that your ISP uses, specify it in the router settings, and set correct parameters for internet connection... This is done in the settings of your router. Now I will show in more detail for specific devices.

If the Internet does not work through Tp-Link, D-Link, Asus, ZyXEL, Linksys, Tenda

OnTp-Link provider parameters are set on the tabNetwork - WAN... You can enter the settings according to this instruction. In fieldWAN Connection Type select the required connection type and set the required parameters (they depend on the selected connection) provided by the provider.

Next we have D-Link... There, Internet connection parameters are set on the tab Net - WAN... Click the button Add toand follow the instructions. Instructions for entering the settings on D-link.

On devicesAsus everything is about the same. We go into the settings, and go to the tab the Internet... On this page, we set the parameters for connecting to the provider.

If you haveZyXEL does not distribute the Internet, then we do this: go to the settings (detailed instructions), go to the tab the Internet, select the required connection and add it.

OnLinksys you need to go to the tab Customization - basic settings... And there already set the required parameters. If you do not know how to enter the Linksys router settings, then see this article.

If you haveTenda, then go to the control panel, click on the top itemAdvanced Settings... Internet settings can be set on the tabWAN settings.

I showed you where in the settings of different routers you can set the parameters for connecting to the Internet. What parameters you will set depends on what provider you have. But, it is very important to specify the correct settings, otherwise, the router will not distribute the Internet. If you indicate everything correctly, but the Internet does not work exactly, then it is possible that your provider is binding by MAC address. If so, ask him to write down the MAC address of the router (it is indicated on the sticker on the bottom of the router). This can be done by phone.

If you have tried everything and nothing helped, then write in the comments, describe the problem in detail, we will figure it out. The main thing is to determine what problem you have: the router does not distribute the network, or there is a network, but does not distribute the Internet.
