In this article, we will look at solutions to the problem when some sites on the computer do not open. A popular problem that often appears when connecting through a router, Wi-Fi, or cable. Basically, the connection method is not important. The result is always the same - some pages in the browser just stopped opening. For many, this problem appears when connecting to a new network, after installing a router, or just at some point.

I also noticed that most often search engines (Yandex, Google, and all their services), social networks (VKontakte, Facebook, Odnoklassnik), and other popular networks stop opening. It doesn't matter, the main thing is that access to some site has disappeared, and this problem needs to be fixed. In fact, there are a lot of reasons why some sites do not open. The problem can be both in the computer itself and in the router (if the Internet is connected through it).

When you cannot get to a site, and other sites open normally, then in your browser, in any case, some kind of error or message appears. Most likely, the site takes a long time to load, and an error appears "The page is not available" (ERR_ TIMED_OUT, ERR_CONNECTION_ CLOSED). It all depends on the browser, and the reason why there is no access to the site.

At the same time, the Internet is connected, programs like Skype are working, and other pages open perfectly. In some cases, no site opens.

Pay attention to the message that appears when you try to open the required page. Perhaps the ISP itself has restricted access to the site you want to visit. In this case, there will be a message that access is denied or restricted. The site is blocked.

Also, very often antiviruses and firewalls block sites that are in their database of malicious sites. In this case, it will also not be difficult to guess that the address is blocked by the antivirus. There will be a logo and description. If you still want to go to the site, then you need to disable the antivirus, or add the address to the firewall exceptions. This is not always safe. Browsers themselves can also block malicious sites.

If everything opened perfectly before, then remember what you did before the problem appeared. Maybe they changed some settings, or installed programs. Very often, after installing some programs, problems appear with access to sites.

Reasons why some sites do not open more often

I'll start with the most popular ones, in my opinion. Let's consider the solutions in the same order.

  • Due to problems with DNS addresses.
  • Pages may not open due to issues in the hosts file.
  • Failure of the TCP / IP protocol.
  • Viruses and malware.
  • Invalid values in the Windows registry.
  • Some sites may not open due to an incorrect MTU value.

I recommend checking the settings in that order.

No access to some sites: changing DNS addresses

According to my observations, some pages often do not open precisely because of problems with DNS addresses. Typically, your ISP issues DNS automatically. I advise you to set static DNS addresses. Now I will show you how to do this in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. You can also change these addresses on mobile devices, or in the Wi-Fi router settings.

Right click on the internet connection icon (in the tray), and select Network and Sharing Center... Next select Change adapter settings.

Right-click on the adapter through which you have an internet connection and select Properties... If the Internet is over Wi-Fi, then this is a Wireless Network Connection. And if by cable, then Local Area Connection (Ethernet in Windows 10). Highlight item Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4), and press the button properties... Place the switch nearUse the following DNS server addresses, and include the following addresses: 8.8.8.88.8.4.4 (as in the screenshot below). Click on Ok.

We reboot the computer and check the work.

We check the hosts file if the pages do not open in the browser

The Windows hosts file is really a vulnerability. Many viruses make changes to the hosts file without problems. And if you write site addresses in this file, then they will stop opening. Therefore, we need to check and, if necessary, clean the hosts file. Often in the hosts file you can see the registered addresses of the sites vk.com, ok.ru, etc. They should not be there.

Go to addressC: Windows System32 drivers etc open the filehosts, and select the program to watch Notebook... A standard, clean file looks something like this:

If you see there any third-party website addresses that you cannot open, then they need to be removed. Or copy the standard contents of the hosts file and replace the contents of your file with it. You can also download a ready-made, clean file and just replace it. I will write in more detail on working with the hosts file in a separate instruction.

Resetting the TCP / IP protocol settings

Another tip is to reset the TCP / IP parameters. We do this: press the key combination Win + R, enter the commandcmd and press Ok.

A command prompt will open. Copy and paste the command into it:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter to execute it. You should see the following result:

We reboot the computer, and try to open sites that you did not open.

Viruses and malware can block access to websites

There are many viruses that deny access to certain sites. They usually do this through the same hosts file, registry entries, or changing TCP / IP parameters. If you have any suspicions that problems with opening some sites are caused by a virus, then be sure to check your computer. This can be done with the installed antivirus (if it is, and if not, install it). Also, I would advise you to check the system with the AVZ utility, or Dr.Web CureIt (or better with both).

The exact same problem may appear after installing some programs. Basically, these are programs that allow you to download videos and music from social networks (VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, etc.). Just uninstall these programs and check your computer for viruses.

You can also try to open the site from another browser. Install the latest version of the browser Opera, Chrome, etc.

Websites do not open - check the Windows registry

Press the keyboard shortcut Win + R, enter the commandregedit, and press Ok.

The Windows Registry Editor will open. Go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Windows... There will be a parameterApplnit_DLLs... If there is no meaning opposite to it, then everything is fine. If any value is set there, then right-click on Applnit_DLLs and select change.

Delete the value and click Ok.

Also, you can go to the address specified in the "Value" field and delete the file.

Checking and changing the MTU parameter

There is such a parameter as MTU. I will not tell you now what it is and what it is for. But, if this parameter is set incorrectly, then some sites simply do not open in the browser. Or they do not open quite correctly, not completely.

If you have a connection via a router, then we change the MTU in the settings of the router, on the page with the settings for connecting to the Internet. There definitely is such a point. What value to indicate there, you can check with your Internet provider. Or, just experiment. By default, the value of 1500 is most likely specified in the router settings (it changes depending on what type of Internet connection the provider uses). You can try changing it to 1460, or 1420. If you have Internet via 3G USB modem, then install 1476.

This is how the MTU changes on the Tp-Link router:

Remember to save your settings and reboot your router.

Conclusion

There are many solutions, someone is helped by changing the DNS, someone is cleaning the hosts file, or something else. We need to try, not give up, and the victory will be ours 🙂

I think after these steps, you were able to go to a site that had not opened before. Share the results in the comments, write what helped. Ask questions, I will try to help.
