Connecting to an FTP server from an Android smartphone or tablet

There are more and more models of Wi-Fi routers that have a USB connector and support running an FTP server. In the previous article, I wrote about setting up an FTP server on TP-LINK routers, and I plan to prepare instructions for other routers.

After starting the FTP server, you can connect devices to it. With the connection of computers everything is clear, there you can use a standard tool. Android devices can also be connected to an FTP server running on your router, or to a remote server via the Internet. All we need to know is the FTP server address, username and password. And if you have enabled anonymous login, then the username and password will not be needed.

From a tablet or phone that runs Android, I recommend connecting through a free file manager called "ES Explorer". We will now consider this method in more detail.

Setting up FTP connection on Android devices

First, install "ES Explorer" from Google Play, you will find it by name. Or maybe you already have it installed, check it out.

If you want to connect to a local FTP server running on your router, then the mobile device must be connected to its Wi-Fi network.

Launch "ES Explorer", open the menu on the left, go to the tab "Net""FTP"... Then, click on the "Add" button. Or menu (three-dot button), and "New" (this is in the old version). And in the new window, select the "ftp" protocol.

In the next window, we need to set the data for connecting to the server. We indicate the server address. If it is running on your router, then you need to specify the local IP address of the router there. Next is the username and password. If they are not there, then put a tick "Anonymous". And provide some name for the connection. Click "Ok".

Our connection folder will appear.

Open the folder and get access to files on the drive via FTP connection. If you have administrator rights, or anonymous access (open), then you can create new folders, files, and perform any operations with them.

It's that simple.

By the way, in the "ES Explorer" program there is also an opportunity to launch your FTP server (Remote Access), and connect to the phone from a computer via Wi-Fi to work with files of a mobile device. For detailed instructions on setting up such a connection, see a separate article: https://help-wifi.com/android/obmen-fajlami-cherez-wi-fi-router-mezhdu-android-telefonom-i-kompyuterom/.

A good way to share files wirelessly.
