Hello! Now we will deal with the "Connection limited" problem that occurs when connecting to the Internet in Windows 10 via a wireless Wi-Fi network, or using a network cable. This is probably the most popular error that can be seen not only on Windows 10, but also on Windows 8 and Windows 7. The seven simply said "No Internet access".

The solutions to the "Limited" problem in Windows 10 are very different. Now we will try to figure it out. On solving the same problem in Windows 7, I recently prepared a detailed article.

If you have already encountered this problem, then you probably noticed the status near the Wi-Fi network"Limited".

And a yellow exclamation mark next to the connection icon in the notification bar.

And when connected via cable (Ethernet), the status will be "No internet connection"... I also recently wrote about the problem when the computer does not respond at all to the connection of the network cable.

Be that as it may, by Wi-Fi you connect to the Internet, or by cable, if you see such an error, then the Internet on your computer will not work.

Without Internet access in Windows 10: general tips to solve the problem

First, let's look at general, simple tips that may help you solve this Internet problem in Windows 10. It doesn't matter what kind of connection you have, via Wi-Fi, or Ethernet:

  • Just restart your laptop, and restart your router (if you have a router connection).
  • If you have a cable connection, then you need to check it. See if everything is connected properly. If possible, try replacing the cable.
  • Try disabling your antivirus.
  • Check if you have paid for the Internet.
  • If you are just setting up a router, and in Windows 10 you see the "Limited" error, then the problem is most likely in the settings of the router. Check them, and correctly set the parameters for connecting to the provider. And also, on this topic, we have a separate instruction: when setting up the router, it says "Without access to the Internet", or "Limited".
  • Determine if the problem is in your computer, router, or ISP.

And the most important thing:

We need to find out what the problem is. Very often the Wi-Fi router is to blame. Try connecting other devices to it, if the Internet works on them, then the problem is in your laptop. If, after connecting to the router of another device, the Internet does not work on it, then the problem is in the router, or the Internet provider. To find out, you can connect the Internet directly to your computer (without a router) and check the work, or call the provider's support and find out everything. If the problem is in the router, then you need to check the cable connection to it, and the settings. Customize according to the instructions that you can find on our website.

If you find out that the problem is in the computer, then read the article below, we will figure it out.

And by tradition, the first thing we do is check the IP and DNS address settings. We are trying to set static addresses, or set automatic receipt.

Configuring IP and DNS addresses in Windows 10 for problems with the Internet

Very often, the "Restricted" status may appear due to problems in setting up IP and DNS addresses. Windows 10 is no exception in this case. These settings should be checked first. And it doesn't matter how you are connected to the Internet, by air, or by cable.

Right click on the internet connection icon and select Network and Sharing Center.

Next, on the left, select Change adapter settings.

Right-click on the adapter through which you have an Internet connection and select Properties.

  • If you get the "Limited" error when connecting via Wi-Fi, then click on the adapter Wireless network.
  • If the connection is by cable, then the adapterEthernet.

A window will open in which you need to select IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4) and press the button Properties.

If you have automatic IP acquisition set there, then try to set static data by checking the box next to the item Use the following IP address... For example, such:

  1. IP address - 192.168.1.10 (the last digit may be different), provided that the IP of your router is 192.168.1.1. Maybe 192.168.0.1 more. You can see this from the bottom of the router, on the sticker.
  2. Subnet mask will be registered automatically.
  3. Main gate same as your router's address: 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1.
  4. Preferred DNS Server specify - 8.8.8.8
  5. Alternative DNS server - 8.8.4.4

Screenshot for clarity:

If you have some data set there, then try to automatically obtain IP and DNS.

And one more way. You can try to set the IP automatically, and set your own DNS servers, which I indicated above.

After the changes, it is advisable to restart the computer and the router.

Some more tips to solve the problem

  • If you get an error on your laptop when it is disconnected from the mains, then try connecting. It happens that when operating on battery power, the system limits the power of the wireless adapter. You can prevent the disconnection of the wireless adapter to save power. Try this.
  • You can also try updating the driver for your wireless adapter or network card. It depends on which connection you have an error on. The driver that automatically installs "ten" does not always work stably. Download the driver from the official website for your laptop / adapter model and install it. See the article: solving problems with the wireless Wi-Fi adapter driver in Windows 10. If you have problems with the lack of the Internet, after checking the parameters about which I wrote above, you should definitely experiment with the drivers.
  • Check if the checkbox next to "IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" is checked in the properties of the network or wireless adapter.

You can also check if your region is set correctly in the router settings. You can check this in the control panel, as a rule, on the tab where the Wi-Fi network is configured.

I already wrote above that most often, the "Connection is limited" problem in Windows 10, and not only in the "top ten", is observed due to problems in the Wi-Fi router, or at the Internet provider. More precisely, in the Internet connection (WAN) settings. Many people encounter this problem when setting up a router for the first time. If your computer does not work with different networks, then yes, the problem is with it.

Update: Two More Ways to Fix "Limited" Issue in Windows 10

These solutions were suggested to me in the comments. Thanks to everyone who shared useful information!

In the first method, we will enable FIPS compatibility mode (remember, this method was also used in Windows 7 and Windows 8). And in the second method, we will check if there are any unnecessary components in the properties of your adapter that use the connection.

Enabling the compatibility mode with the Federal Information Processing Standard

Right-click on the internet connection icon, and select "Network and Sharing Center". In the window that opens, click on the link with the name of your Wi-Fi network. Like the screenshot below.

In the new window, click on the "Wireless Network Properties" button, then go to the "Access" tab, and click on the "Advanced Settings" button. We put a tick next to "Enable for this network the compatibility mode with the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)". And click on the Ok button on all windows.

The second way: we check the list of components in the properties of your connection.

Open the "Change adapter settings" window, right-click on one of the adapters: "Ethernet", or "Wireless network", depending on how you have an Internet connection (cable, or Wi-Fi). Select Properties.

And in the "Selected components are used by this connection" window, make sure that there are no unnecessary, marked components. In the comments, they wrote about an issue when an antivirus component was marked in this list, and therefore the connection in Windows 10 was "Restricted". If you have something extra there, just uncheck it and click Ok. Restart your computer. If it does not help, then it is advisable to return everything back. I have it like this:

If you know other solutions to this problem, then you can share useful information in the comments, it will be useful to many. In the same place, you can leave your questions on the topic of the article, we will figure it out together.

If possible, I will add new information on the problem.
