I decided to write about the ASUS Router program. This application is for mobile devices, smartphones and tablets that run on Android or iOS. With this application, you can very conveniently and easily configure your ASUS router, or simply manage it. ASUS has managed to create a really cool and beautiful application for managing the router from mobile devices. I tested it on an Android smartphone and an iPhone. The functionality of the application, and the appearance, are almost the same on both platforms.

Features of the "ASUS Router" application:

  • Installing and configuring a new router from ASUS. We establish a connection in the program, and set the necessary settings.
  • View information in real time: traffic usage, CPU and memory usage, client view.
  • Wi-Fi network management: disable, change the password, view the wireless network password, activate the "Wi-Fi Eco" mode.
  • View and manage Wi-Fi and wired clients: information about devices connected to the router, blocking the Internet, speed limiting.
  • Other functions: software update, router diagnostics, security diagnostics, parental control, FTP and Samba launch, Internet setup, router reboot, etc.

Compatible routers:

The program does not work with all routers. For example, it refused to work with ASUS RT-N12. In the application store (Google Play, or App Store), the description indicates the models of the supported routers. I think that in the near future the list will be replenished with cheaper models.

Let's take a closer look at the main features and capabilities. And also, let's figure out how to set up a new ASUS router through the program from a tablet or phone. Which in most cases is even easier than from a computer via a web interface. I checked it on the ASUS RT-N18U router.

We control the ASUS router from a smartphone or tablet

You can install the ASUS Router app from Google Play if you have an Android device. And if you have a mobile device from Apple, then from the App Store. Through the search, search for "ASUS Route". The program is of course free.

Just in case, I give links to the program in the app stores:

  • App Store - https://itunes.apple.com/ru/app/asus-router/id1033794044?mt=8
  • Android - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asus.aihome&hl=ru

I think there will be no problems with the installation. Install and launch the application. You must be connected to your ASUS router you want to control.

In the main window, select the item "I want to manage this router" (yes, the translation is interesting. There is, I will enter the router to which you are currently connected). Next, select our router, specify the username and password (which protect the settings of your router, by default: admin and admin), and click the "Login" button.

An interesting ring will be displayed in the main window, with different information in real time: traffic, users, CPU load. The information in the ring can be flipped. And if you click on the name of our router, then detailed information on the router will open: IP address, MAC address, firmware version, you can reset the settings, restart the router, turn off, etc.

Managing connected devices (clients)

Below there is a "Devices" tab. We open it, and see who is currently connected to your ASUS router. How to view clients from a computer, through a web interface, I wrote here. Both Wi-Fi clients and devices that are connected via cable will be displayed there. By clicking on the required device, you can block access to the Internet for it, and limit the speed for a specific device. It is a pity that there is no way to completely block the client by MAC address. And for some reason it shows that the iPad is connected via a network cable 🙂

Setting up a Wi-Fi network of an ASUS router from a tablet or smartphone

To configure the wireless network, a separate tab "Wireless settings" is highlighted below. There you can change the network name (SSID), change the password for Wi-Fi, or disable it. And also, you can completely disable the Wi-Fi network. But, be careful. After all, after turning off the Wi-Fi network, you will not be able to control the router. If you have a dual-band router, then there will be the ability to separately control the 5GHz Wi-Fi network.

Other features of ASUS Router app

We've covered the main features. Let's now take a look at the features found on the More tab. There are different settings:

  • Setting up a backup - you can create a copy of the router settings, and restore them if necessary (a useful thing).
  • Speed limiter - you can set speed limits for different clients.
  • CPU & RAM - we look at how much the processor and memory of the router are loaded.
  • Network Diagnostics - Various utilities for diagnosing ASUS router.
  • DNS settings - you can manually register your DNS. Useful for various problems in the Internet. For example, when some sites do not open.
  • Firmware Update - check and update the firmware of your ASUS router. But, I advise you to update the software from your computer. Here's how to flash ASUS routers.
  • FTP - start and manage FTP server on ASUS router. Alternatively, see the article on setting up FTP via ASUS router settings.
  • Network Security Checker is a test to detect vulnerabilities in your router. Provides information on bad passwords, enabled services, and other settings. A good setting for anyone concerned about the security of their network.
  • Parental Control - Control Internet access for individual devices. But, it seems to me that it is much more convenient to manage these functions on the "Devices" tab.
  • Quick Internet Setup - here you can set parameters for connecting to an Internet provider. Configure PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP settings, etc. This is the router's quick setup wizard.
  • Share your Wi-Fi - you can view the name of your Wi-Fi network and its password (to connect new devices), or send this information via social networks.
  • Samba - manage the sharing of files stored on a USB storage device connected to the ASUS router.
  • Traffic statistics - the speed of incoming and outgoing traffic.
  • "Wi-Fi eco" mode - I haven't tested it yet, but if you enable this function, then the Wi-Fi power is reduced to save energy. Well, according to the idea, the radiation will be less.

The number of functions may differ depending on the router model. Also, in the upper right corner, you can see notifications with tips for setting up the router.

Now some screenshots with different settings.

There are a lot of settings, it's impossible to show everything.

Everything is beautiful and functional. If only the translation into Russian was improved a little, everything is fine. Just be careful not to change the settings if you don't know what they are responsible for.

Setting up a new ASUS router from an Android or iOS device

If you have a new router and want to configure it through the program from a mobile device, then connect to its wireless network. The network will have a standard name. And the default password (PIN) (factory) is indicated on the router itself (on a sticker). But, there, the default Wi-Fi network does not seem to be protected.

We turn on the router, connect the Internet to it (to the WAN connector), connect from the mobile device to the Wi-Fi network of the new router, and go to the ASUS Router program. If you select "I want to set up a new router" in the main window, a small, step-by-step instruction will appear. But, since you are already connected to the wireless network of your router, we simply select the top item.

Then we select our router and specify the factory password and username (admin and admin).

The main settings that need to be done are setting up a connection to the provider and setting up a Wi-Fi network, setting a password. This can be done using the quick setup wizard, which is located on the "More" - "Quick Internet setup" tab. Click on the start button and follow the instructions. This is a great way to set up your new ASUS router.

After a quick setup, you can change any parameters already through separate sections with settings in the ASUS Router program. The main thing is that the Internet through the router will work.

Application protection

You can set a password that will be requested when entering the ASUS Router app. Or, use the fingerprint sensor (Touch ID). But, for some reason, it did not work on my iPhone 6. To set a password, open the menu, select "Advanced settings", then "Lock code", and set a password.

Now no one will be able to access the settings of the router through your smartphone.

Write in the comments if you liked the program. You can also ask questions. Good luck!
