Connecting the ASUS RT-N18U router via Wi-Fi to the ZTE Promsvyaz optical modem

Hello.

The Promsvyaz modem initially distributed Internet via w-fi in my apartment. I connected computers, tablets, smartphones quickly and easily. And everywhere in the settings (Windows 10, smartphones on Android, tablet on iOS) I registered the ip devices, network mask, gateway, dns server.

Recently, various devices "lost" the signal coming from this modem. Rebooting the modem did not help.

In this connection, on the advice of the provider's technical support (since everything works on their part, and recently I have large cardboard boxes in the corridor that can obscure the Promsvyaz modem) I purchased an ASUS RT-N18U router to amplify the signal.

I set it up according to the instructions: https://help-wifi.com/asus/nastrojka-routera-asus-v-kachestve-repitera-rezhim-povtoritelya-wi-fi-seti/

When in the "local network" tab I specified all the parameters to be determined automatically, the router in the repeater mode was assigned the address 192.168.1.1 by default, and 192.168.100.1 for the mother modem. Accordingly, it was possible to connect to the router, but without access to the Internet. Well, the proprietary application on a smartphone, when connected via a Promsvyaz modem, did not detect this router. When I assigned the same ip to the router as the Promsvyaz modem, which was already installed by default, nothing worked either.

Then I manually assigned the router ip-address 192.168.100.10, specified 192.168.100.1 as the gateway (I indicated the same gateway earlier in Windows, on a smartphone, etc. in the settings for connecting via Wi-Fi to Promsvyaz, in the network mask is the same - 255.255.255.0, as DNS servers for the router I registered 192.168.100.1 and 8.8.8.8

There is a second Wi-Fi network called a duplicate network, which was earlier (Internet), only with the name Internet_RPT. In the connection settings in Windows 10, I manually, as before, prescribed all the necessary parameters.

I connect to Internet_RPT, there is Internet, everything works. A new difficulty has just appeared. The Internet is lagging. That is, the page does not load instantly, with some pause. Moreover, this is observed on any device.

I have already changed the addresses of the DNS servers both in the router settings and in the Windows settings, specifying only the Google DNS, removing the IP address of the Promsvyaz modem, still nothing helps. The gateway and netmask are exactly the same as those of Promsvyaz.

The Promsvyaz modem and the ASUS router are on the same bedside table.

What can be wrong?

Waiting for your reply. Thanks.

Answer:

Hello. I want to say thank you right away for describing your problem in detail. All clear.

I understand that now the main problem is that the Internet is unstable, slow loading of pages. Everything is somehow very complicated and confusing for you. I have statically enter the addresses on each device, IP, DNS, etc. You can do without all this, and without the repeater mode on the router.

It is clear that you have a ZTE modem from Promsvyaz, which establishes a connection with the provider and distributes the Internet. When he started to "joke" you bought an ASUS RT-N18U router to help him. But, it gave nothing. I think that the problem here is solely in the modem itself, or the provider (you never know what they say there, they are always doing well). And this is definitely not a problem with ASUS RT-N18U, or IP settings.

After all, both with a router and without a router, the Internet is unstable. This means that the problem is either with the modem or with the provider. It would be nice to try to replace the modem itself, if possible. Check the connection, or call specialists from the provider to check everything (the modem is theirs).

By connecting an ASUS RT-N18U router with a ZTE "Promsvyaz" modem

You did not connect them quite correctly. Everything can be done much easier and more stable. You don't need repeater mode. Who knows, maybe with the correct connection of the router, everything will work well, and without glitches. Especially if the problem is in the Wi-Fi network from the modem.

First of all, do a factory reset on your ASUS RT-N18U.

Next, connect the router to the modem using the cable that comes with the router. On the modem, connect the cable to the LAN connector, and on the router to the WAN (Internet).

The Internet through the router should already work. On the "Internet" tab, the connection type "Automatic IP" must be selected (it is the default).

Wi-Fi network on ASUS RT-N18U can be configured according to the instructions: https://help-wifi.com/asus/nastrojka-routera-asus-rt-n18u-podklyuchenie-nastrojka-interneta-i-wi-fi-seti/ ...

That's it, now connect your devices to the ASUS router. Only on devices (Windows 10, smartphones), already set up automatic obtaining of IP and DNS. Or, getting an IP automatically, and DNS write 8.8.8.8 and the second 8.8.4.4.

Something like this. This is the most optimal connection option. You can also use the ASUS router simply as an access point, but this will not change anything.

Write about the results.
