But the computer can view the properties of a specific Wi-Fi network to which we are connected, and change some parameters that will be applied only to a specific network. For example, disallow automatic connection when the computer is within range of this network, change the network profile, manually set the IP address, or set the network as a metered connection.

In Windows 10, you can set all these Wi-Fi network settings on one page by simply opening the properties of the wireless network we need.

To open the settings, just click on the "Properties" button in the list of networks.

Let's consider all the settings separately.

Connect automatically within range

Everything is elementary. One Off / On switch. When the function is enabled, the computer will automatically connect to this network. If disabled, you will need to connect manually. No password re-entry.

For convenience, leave the switch in the On position. Especially if this is your Wi-Fi network.

Network profile. Public and private Wi-Fi networks in Windows 10

Here you can choose which network you are connected to. There are two options: public and private. What is the difference? If you are connected to a network that you trust (at home, at work), then you can select the "Private" profile. Then the computer will be detected on the local network. For example, other devices will see it. It will be possible to exchange files, etc. by configuring the sharing settings (link to settings under the profile description).

And if you select "Public", then your computer will be hidden on the local network.

When connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, always set the network profile to "Public".

Limit connection

In Windows 10, you can set up a Wi-Fi network as a metered connection.

It happens that we connect to Wi-Fi networks with limited traffic. For example, when we distribute Wi-Fi from a phone, or through a mobile 3G / 4G router. There are different cases. So, to make Windows 10 more economical in spending traffic, you can switch the "Set as a metered connection" switch to the On position in the Wi-Fi network settings.

Over a metered connection, for example, Windows 10 will download the most necessary and minor updates. And not everything, and when she needs it.

IP parameters of a specific Wi-Fi network

For a separate Wi-Fi network, you can manually set the IP and DNS parameters. By default, the computer automatically receives these addresses when connected. But, if necessary, you can register them manually.

Click on the "Edit" button.

Then select "Manual" and enable the protocol for which we will set addresses: IPv4, or IPv6.

We register the necessary addresses and save the settings. For example, I registered static DNS from Google.

Be careful. If the addresses are incorrect, the computer will not be able to connect to Wi-Fi. Change back to "Automatic (DHCP)" if necessary.

Properties

Well, the last point is Properties. There are no settings there. You can just see information about the Wi-Fi network and wireless adapter.

SSID (network name), protocol (by which we are connected to the network), security type, network range, channel, IP address, DNS.

The manufacturer of the Wi-Fi module, description (where the model is indicated), version of the installed driver and MAC address are also indicated.

You can copy all this information by clicking on one button.
