After the ability to receive push notifications appeared in browsers, sites began to use this functionality and display a window to visitors asking them to display notifications in the browser. And if the visitor allows the display of push notifications, then periodic pop-up notifications will appear in the browser that some new material or other information has appeared on the site. This is such a new, simple and fast way to subscribe to sites. It seems that I always try to respond to such requests, on different sites, by clicking on the "Block" button, but yesterday in the Opera browser I started receiving notifications (also with advertisements) from one site that was not interesting to me. And this one is a little annoying. Apparently, when I visited this site, I accidentally allowed the display of notifications.

The very idea with these push notifications is not bad. You can quickly subscribe to your favorite sites and always be aware of the release of new materials. No need to enter anything, no emails, etc. Just a pop-up notification in the browser. Although, personally, the request for a subscription on every second site is already a little annoying for me.

But if this functionality was used for its intended purpose, and in the way it was originally intended. The cunning owners of some sites do something like a forced subscription. A message like "Click Allow to continue" and a small cross to close this window. And visitors in all this mess and with a desire to quickly go to the site, click on the "Allow" button, and give the go-ahead to receive notifications. And then notifications from all these sites start to arrive in the browser. They are distracting and even slightly annoying. Moreover, in the notification itself, I did not find an option to unsubscribe. To do this, you need to go to the browser settings.

And what is most unpleasant in this whole situation is that many sites participate in various affiliate programs that sell or transfer subscribers. That is, you subscribed to updates of a site, and then you receive push notifications with some incomprehensible (and sometimes dangerous) advertising. Sometimes the sites themselves make such mailings. There are already a lot of different services and schemes, when, roughly speaking, we are forced to allow the display of push notifications, and then they send different ads in a pop-up browser window.

In this article, I will show you how to disable push notifications in different browsers. I will prepare detailed instructions for Yandex Browser, Opera, Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox... Let's figure out where the browser notification settings are located, and how to manage push notifications from websites. For example, how to unsubscribe from some sites, or prevent a pop-up window with a request to show notifications.

You can go directly to the instructions for your browser:

  • Opera
  • Google chrome
  • Yandex browser
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge

How to turn off notifications in the Opera browser?

Open the Opera browser settings. You can use the keyboard shortcut Alt + P.

Go to the section "Security" - "Site settings".

Next, open the "Notifications" section.

There will be a point at the very top "Ask permission before submitting"... If enabled, then websites (which use push notifications) will be prompted to send notifications (as in the first screenshot in this article). If you disable this item, then such requests will not appear, and you will not be able to subscribe to sites.

Even if you disable the request, the old subscriptions will still be valid. Below you will see sites listed under "Block". These are the sites on which the request appeared and you clicked "Block". The browser remembered your answer and no more request appears on these sites, notifications from these sites do not come. If you remove a site from this list (by opening the menu), then a subscription request will appear. You can also select "Allow" from the menu, thereby subscribing to the site.

Below is another list with Allow sites. The sites you are subscribed to are listed here. To block push notifications in Opera, just open the menu opposite the site and delete it, or select "Block".

To remove all push notification subscriptions, simply remove all sites from the Allow list. Sites that have a cube-shaped icon in front of them cannot be deleted. They were added there by installed extensions.

How do I turn off site notifications in Chrome browser?

In Google Chrome, everything is almost the same as in Opera. You must first go to your browser settings.

Then open the "Privacy and Security" tab and go to "Site Settings".

We open the item "Notifications".

To avoid seeing the subscription request (sending notifications) on sites at all, disable the "Ask for permission before sending" item. If you want to leave the ability to subscribe to push notifications from sites, then do not disable this item.

Then you will see a list of sites in the "Block" section (here are the sites that you have banned from sending notifications) and "Allow" (sites from which push notifications come to your Chrome browser). To disable notification from a site (or sites), remove them from the Allow list. Or move them to the "Block" list.

To completely remove all push notifications from all sites - remove all sites from the list. Except those added by the extension (opposite to them there is an extension icon).

Yandex Browser notifications: how to disable and manage?

In Yandex Browser, push notifications settings are made somehow more simple and understandable in comparison with Opera and Chrome. To get to them, you must first open the settings.

In the left column, go to the sites tab and on the right we immediately see the notification settings. There are three points:

  • Show send requests
  • Don't show send requests
  • Subscribe to notifications automatically

I definitely do not recommend installing the last point. Either leave the default (show prompts) or disable them if they bother you or don't need to.

To go to the list of sites from which you have blocked or allowed notifications, click on the "From other sites" item.

There will be two tabs: sending notifications "Allowed" and "Forbidden".

The "Allowed" tab contains sites that can send push notifications to your Yandex Browser. You can simply delete them from there, thereby preventing them from sending notifications.

Sites that are not allowed to send notifications can not be touched. If you delete them from there, then a subscription request will appear on these sites again (unless you disabled the request itself).

Disallow site notifications in Mozilla Firefox

Open the Mozilla Firefox browser settings.

Next, you need to open the "Privacy and Security" section and scroll down to the "Permissions" section. There will be an item "Notifications", and opposite it is a button "Options". Click on it.

A window will open in which there will be a list of sites to which you have either prohibited sending notifications ("Block" status), or allowed ("Allow" status). You can simply delete these sites from there. Or disable push notifications in Mozilla Firefox by setting the status to "Block". There is also a button "Delete all websites". You can get rid of all notifications in one fell swoop.

If you do not want Firefox to show requests to send you notifications on sites, you can check the box next to "Block new requests to send you notifications."

With notifications in Firefox sorted out, let's move on.

How do I turn off push notifications from sites in Microsoft Edge?

Everything is done in four steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge browser options.
  2. Go to the "Advanced" tab and click on the "Manage Permissions" button.
  3. You can simply remove a site from the list, and it will no longer receive push notifications from the Microsoft Edge browser.
  4. But since different permissions can be set for one site (for example, permission to access the microphone, camera, location), you can click on a specific site and disable only notifications.
You can mark the subscription in this way only to some sites.

Afterword

Do not hesitate to remove all push notifications from sites that you are not interested in and only distract. Especially if you did not subscribe to these sites yourself (subscribed by accident), or they send some kind of advertising. It's a great and handy tool that isn't always used for its intended purpose. And here, first of all, the fault of the website owners themselves, who use push notifications not for the convenience of visitors and attracting an additional audience, but for making money.

Setting up notifications in the browser, or deleting already active subscriptions to sites is not at all difficult. Personally, I generally prohibited the browser from sending new requests to send notifications. And sometimes it gets boring to block these offers.

If you still have questions, ask them in the comments.
