Found one interesting feature in Windows 10 today. More precisely, in the Microsoft Edge browser. It is called "Transfer Multimedia to Device". At first I did not understand what kind of item it was in the settings. I clicked on it, and the browser started looking for some device to display an image on it. I turned on the TV, Edge saw it immediately, and a picture from the site appeared on the TV. Then I went to YouTube, and without any problems brought the video from the laptop to the TV over Wi-Fi. Now I will tell you about this function in more detail.

Update from 07.21.2017: As it turned out, after installing the Windows 10 update, version 1703 (build 15063.13), the Microsoft Edge browser stopped displaying multimedia content via DLNA. Now only Miracast / WiDi.

There is a comment from Microsoft support. As it turned out, this problem cannot be solved, the function is missing in the update. Perhaps in the next updates everything will be fixed. I recently wrote an article in which I talked about setting up DLNA in Windows 10. There we displayed videos, photos and music stored on the computer on the TV. And the built-in feature in the Edge browser allows you to display multimedia content directly from sites. For example, videos from YouTube and music from Yandex.Music are displayed perfectly. I have not checked, but there is information that you can broadcast photos from Facebook and movies with ivi. Perhaps there is support for other sites as well.

Everything works using DLNA technology, or Miracast. If your TV supports one of these technologies, you can easily stream videos from Microsoft Edge browser to your large TV screen. Or music from a photo.

The main thing is that the computer (from which you want to broadcast) and the TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. More precisely, to one router. Since the connection can be not only via Wi-Fi, but also via a network cable.

How to transfer media to device from Edge browser

Everything is very simple. Open the Edge browser, go to YouTube, for example, and launch some kind of video. Then open the menu and select "Transfer media to device".

A window will appear with a search for devices, where your TV should appear (or another DLNA-enabled device that is on your local network). I have a Philips TV. We select it.

The connection starts and the video plays on the TV. The browser will have a black window.

You can control playback both from the browser and from the TV. It is a pity that the browser itself has no connection and playback information. If you switch to another video, it will automatically start playing on the TV.

Music broadcast

I checked on the Yandex.Music service. We go to the site, launch a song, and transfer the multimedia to the device.

Music will play from the TV speakers.

Unknown error

When trying to enable this feature on other sites, the most common error was "An unknown error has occurred."

If, for example, you run this function on this site, then an arbitrary picture will appear on the TV.

For everything to work and display well, the Microsoft Edge browser must be friendly with a specific site. It is clear that these will only be large and well-known services like YouTube. But everything works well on YouTube, you can watch videos on TV without any problems if there is no built-in YouTube application or it does not work.

The most interesting thing is that online video, or music, can be displayed on TV. Previously, as far as I know, it was not possible to do this using DLNA technology. You could only play files that were already downloaded to your computer.
