Question

How to connect a laptop and a BOX TV set-top box with one cable without a router. The cable is configured by the provider to the laptop. If you switch the cable to a set-top box, there is no Internet. You advise to contact the provider to change the settings for the set-top box, but will the laptop work if you reconnect it after setting up the set-top box. I asked this question in a search, but the site did not find anything.

Answer

Honestly, I will not beckon what and where I advised on this problem. I have to enter about changing the settings from the provider to the set-top box.

See, it all depends on the provider. If he uses binding by MAC address (and the type of connection is Dynamic IP), then the Internet can only work on the device to which the Internet is bound. If you write down the MAC address of the TV box with the provider, then after connecting the cable back to the laptop, the Internet will not work on it. If bindings by MAC address no, then the Internet should work immediately on the device to which the cable is connected.

There is one solution. You can hardly change the MAC address on the set-top box. But it can be changed on a laptop. Register the same MAC address on the laptop as on the set-top box. It can be viewed in the prefix settings, somewhere in the "About device" section. How to register it on a laptop, I wrote in the article on how to find out and change the MAC address in Windows 10. After that, register this MAC address (which will be the same on a laptop and TV Box) from the provider. The internet should work through one cable on both devices.

But this is a so-so solution. Better, of course, to buy a Wi-Fi router. This will solve all problems.

Please note that the provider may not have a MAC address binding (you did not write about this), but there may be a connection via a high-speed connection, which can be configured without problems on a laptop, but most likely not configured on a TV set-top box.

Or one more solution. If your set-top box has Wi-Fi, then you can try to distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi from a laptop. And connect your Smart set-top box to this Wi-Fi network.
