Android phone as a Wi-Fi adapter for a computer

Today in the comments I was asked a very interesting question. Is it possible to use an Android phone as a Wi-Fi adapter for a computer. So that the phone or tablet is connected to a Wi-Fi network, and in modem mode via a USB cable, send the Internet to a stationary computer. Which does not have a Wi-Fi adapter and, accordingly, there is no way to directly connect to wireless networks. And as it turned out, you can.

For some reason I never had such a need, and I was not interested in this issue. It seems like from the second version, the modem mode appeared on Android. And almost all phones and tablets can distribute the Internet to other devices via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB cable. But as it turned out, Android devices can share not only mobile Internet (EDGE, 3G, 4G), but also Wi-Fi. This means that you can make a full-fledged Wi-Fi adapter for your PC from your phone.

This is a very useful feature. It is not uncommon for a situation when, after installing a router or buying a PC, it is not possible to stretch a network cable to the computer. And with this function, you can connect it to the Internet. Albeit temporarily, until you buy a regular Wi-Fi adapter (I wrote what it is here, and you can read about how to choose an adapter here).

I configured and tested everything on my Samsung Galaxy J5 phone. Found only one. I understand that on other phones and tablets with a different version of Android and shell, the settings may differ slightly. But I think it's not critical. You will understand. Or ask in the comments if you can't find the settings.

I would also like to add that the connection to the Wi-Fi network via the phone is very stable and fast. The Internet "flies" on the computer. Phones are equipped with good wireless modules (not all, of course).

We connect the computer to a Wi-Fi network via an Android device as an adapter

First I advise disable mobile internet on your phone. Just turn off your cellular data connection. This is just in case. To know for sure that a Wi-Fi connection is in use.

Of course, your phone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Using a USB cable, we connect the phone to the computer. It will not only act as an adapter, but it will also become infected.

On the phone, go to the settings, in the "Connections" section, then go to the "Access point and modem" and turn on the "USB modem" (shared access to the Internet connection on this phone).

The computer will immediately have access to the Internet via the phone.

Just another network adapter will appear. I have Ethernet 4 (Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device). You may have another one. It does not matter.

To stop using your smartphone as a Wi-Fi receiver, just turn off the USB tethering function in the settings, or disconnect your phone from your computer.

Likewise, you can use an Android tablet.

I hope this article was useful to you. Be sure to leave your feedback in the comments.
