It is not uncommon for a situation when there is a laptop, or a stationary computer to which the Internet is connected, and it is necessary to distribute the Internet to a phone, tablet, or other device. Of course, in this case, it is best to use a Wi-Fi router, to which you can connect the Internet and connect the Internet from it on your phone, computer, etc. But how to do all this without a router, I will tell you in this article.

The Internet can be transferred from a laptop to a phone in several ways. Basically, it doesn't have to be a laptop. You can also use a PC, but there are some nuances. The fact is that in system units, as a rule, there is no built-in wireless module that is responsible for the operation of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. And in laptops it is. But if you have a regular computer and want to use it to distribute the Internet to your phones and other devices, then there is a solution - buying and installing an additional wireless adapter. In the process of writing this article, I will leave links to the necessary instructions that will be useful to you if you have a PC, not a laptop.

There are at least three ways you can transfer the Internet from your laptop to your phone:

  • Via Wi-Fi. This is probably the most popular, versatile and relatively simple method. On a laptop that is connected to the Internet (by cable, or via a USB modem), we launch the distribution of a Wi-Fi network (using Windows, or through third-party programs) and connect the phone to this Wi-Fi network. It can be like an Android phone, iPhone, iPad, another tablet, computer, etc. Of course, all this works without a router. Since every smartphone now has Wi-Fi, there will be no connection problems.
  • Via bluetooth. I don't know how relevant this method is, but this is also possible. It's easier, of course, to distribute the Internet to your phone via Wi-Fi. But there are different situations. Sometimes you just have to use Bluetooth.
  • Via USB cable. In this way, you can transfer the Internet from a computer only to an Android phone or tablet. This solution will not work on iOS devices. On the phone, you need to activate the "Developer menu" and enable "USB debugging". Then connect the phone to the laptop via USB cable and open the general Internet access on the computer.

To be honest, I have not yet transferred the Internet to my phone via Bluetooth and USB cable. I think I'll write about this in a separate article. As for Wi-Fi, everything is a little simpler there. Already many times I set up Wi-Fi distribution from a laptop and connected my phone to this network. I have already written many instructions on this topic. I think you will use this solution.

We distribute the Internet from computer to phone without a router

Using this scheme, you can distribute the Internet to Android and iPhone. And also to other devices that have the ability to connect to Wi-Fi.

For distribution, we need a laptop on which Wi-Fi is configured (installed) and enabled. Or a desktop computer with an external USB, or an internal PCI adapter. If you don't have this, then read the article on how to choose a Wi-Fi adapter for your PC. But if you want to specifically buy a Wi-Fi adapter to distribute the Internet to your phone, then it's better to buy a router already. Let the cheapest. This is much easier and more convenient.

This solution should work without problems in Windows 10, Windows 8 (8.1) and Windows 7. If you have Vista or XP, then I cannot guarantee it will work.

It seems like everything is figured out. Let's get started:

1 Start Command Prompt. This can be done through the search, or through the Start Penalty. It must be run as administrator (by right-clicking on it). Or by running the commandcmd in the window to be opened by pressing the keys Win + R.

Copy the command to the command line:

netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode = allow ssid = "help-wifi.com" key = "12345678" keyUsage = persistent

Where "help-wifi.com" Is the name of the Wi-Fi network that the computer will distribute, and "12345678" - password to connect to this network. You can change them and re-execute the command.

Click Enter.

If you have the same result as mine in the screenshot, then you can continue. Do not close the command line.

2 Execute the second command. With this command, we will launch the Wi-Fi distribution. The laptop will already distribute Wi-Fi to the phone, but so far without access to the Internet. But it should be so.

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

Copy the command and press Enter.

You should see a message that "Hosted Network Started". At this point, the error Failed to start hosted network on Windows appears very often. Follow the link and see the solution.

3Open the general Internet access for the phone (Wi-Fi network to which we will connect it). To do this, go to "Network Connections". You can press Win + R and run the ncpa.cpl command.

Right-click on the connection through which our laptop is connected to the Internet. We select "Properties". Then go to the "Access" tab, put a tick next to "Allow other network users to use the Internet connection of this computer." and from the list select a connection with an asterisk and a number at the end of the name. Something like this:

Please note that you may have a high speed internet connection (with the name of the provider, for example). Not Ethernet, as in my screenshot.

4After these steps, you can already connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network that the laptop distributes and the Internet should already work. But I advise you to stop the distribution with the command:

netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

And immediately run with the command:

netsh wlan start hostednetwork

This command (the last one) must be entered after each shutdown / restart of the computer.

We connect the phone (iPhone, Android) to the Wi-Fi network through a laptop

If you have an iPhone or iPad, then go to the settings in the "Wi-Fi" section, select the Wi-Fi network that the laptop distributes (if you have not changed the network name, then this is the "help-wifi.com" network), enter the password and connect. Everything is very simple.

On phones that work on Android, everything is exactly the same. In the settings, you need to turn on Wi-Fi (if it is off), select the Wi-Fi network that we launched on the computer, enter the password and connect.

In this way, you can connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi almost any phone without a router. Using a laptop or PC for this.

Useful links on this topic:

  • The method that I showed above is described in great detail in separate articles. Especially for Windows 10 - how to distribute Wi-Fi from a laptop on Windows 10. And for Windows 7 - how to distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi from a laptop on Windows 7.
  • If you have Windows 10, then you can try to distribute the Internet to your phone in an easier way - through a mobile hotspot.

  • If after connecting the phone to the computer everything is connected, but the Internet does not work, then check the sharing settings on the computer.

Thus, you can very quickly and without any complicated settings connect your phone to the Internet without a router. Using only a laptop or PC for this.
