How to organize the simultaneous distribution of the Internet from a laptop via Wi-Fi and LAN (via cable)?

Hello Sergey. Thanks for your site - very useful.

The essence of the problem. A small rural store, Internet via a modem with an external antenna, a laptop acts as a router. Needed to connect a POS terminal via LAN. This part works. But Wi-Fi distribution is needed. I installed the mHotSpot program. There is a problem - either the LAN network connects to the Internet, or mHotSpot (but then there is no Internet in the network with the trading terminal). In this case, the network access in the telephone connection flies, it is necessary to reconnect it. How do I make Wi-Fi sharing work with a wired network connection? I would be very grateful if you could suggest a solution. Thanks.

Answer

Hello. I understood your question and task. Yes, you can distribute Wi-Fi from a laptop, and when the laptop is connected to the Internet via a USB modem, you can connect a device to it via a network cable. In your case, this is the terminal. I connected a router, which would then distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi and cable. And this is a very good solution in your case. Here are the instructions: Internet from a 3G / 4G USB modem through a computer to a router and distribution via Wi-Fi.

For some reason I am sure that it is impossible to open shared access to the Internet connection (in our case via a USB modem) for two connections simultaneously (LAN (as I understand it in bridge mode) and a virtual Wi-Fi network). The problem is most likely in the IP addresses. You have already seen this for yourself, when we open public access for a Wi-Fi network - the LAN connection flies. Perhaps there are some tricky solutions - but not likely.

And I think that in your case it is better to connect a Wi-Fi router instead of a terminal. Even some of the most budgetary. The laptop will transmit the Internet via cable to the router, and from the router via cable to the terminal. Well, the router will distribute Wi-Fi. You won't need to run Wi-Fi sharing from your laptop. In addition, a virtual Wi-Fi network does not always work stably.

Better yet, buy a router that supports USB 3G / 4G modems. Ideally, of course, the router will support the modem you already have. We connect the modem to the USB port of the router, set it up and get it from the router to the Internet via cable and Wi-Fi. Simple circuit without unnecessary devices and settings. An article that may be useful to you: Wi-Fi router for USB 3G / 4G modem. How to choose the right one. There are even routers with built-in modems. Just insert the SIM card and get the Internet.

Trust me, it's better to spend 15-30 dollars on a router than using a laptop to share the Internet. Set it up and forget. Moreover, you have a store. Everything needs to work stably. Especially the terminal.
