Is there Wi-Fi on the TV? How do I know where to look?

In this article, I'll show you some simple ways that you can quickly find out if your TV has Wi-Fi. Today, there are practically no TVs on sale with Smart TVs and without a built-in Wi-Fi module.

I looked and found only a few models. This means that after a while, every smart TV will have built-in Wi-Fi. And it is right. And then they came up with these branded, external USB Wi-Fi adapters, which had to be bought for a lot of money, and even it was difficult to buy them. And now you can't find them at all. But the TV is bought not for a year, and not for two. Many now have Smart TVs without built-in Wi-Fi. And you can connect them to the Internet only with a cable.

First you need to understand that if a TV is without Smart TV, then Wi-Fi is definitely not in it. In this case, he is not needed there at all. On this topic, I already wrote a separate article: Smart TV function on TV: is there or not, how to check? But if there is support for Smart TV, then it's not a fact that there is Wi-Fi. It may be such an option that the Internet connection is carried out only using a cable, or through an external Wi-Fi receiver (which most often needs to be bought separately).

If you are wondering whether your TV has Wi-Fi or not, there are several ways to find out:

  1. View TV specifications. Best of all on the official website.
  2. Check TV settings.
  3. View information on the box and in the instructions.

Let's look at the first two methods in more detail. The solutions are universal, suitable for all TVs: Samsung, LG, Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL, Kivi, Ergo, etc. As for Xiaomi TVs, all models of this manufacturer have built-in Wi-Fi.

Solution # 1: check for Wi-Fi in the TV specs

All we need is to know the manufacturer and model of the TV, and access to the Internet. With the second, I think there are no problems. Well, the TV model can be viewed on the box, in the documentation, and on a sticker on the back of the TV.

Then just in the Google or Yandex search engine, enter the manufacturer's name and model. For example, I have a Philips 43PUS7150 / 12. It is advisable to go to the manufacturer's official website.

Or open some popular online stores and check out the technical specifications. There, as a rule, the presence of Wi-Fi is always indicated. I recommend looking at the characteristics on the official website. In my case, in the "Connections" section, opposite to "Wireless Connection", there is support for the built-in Wi-Fi 11n 2x2 module.

So there is Wi-Fi on my TV. It's just not entirely clear why it says "Dual-band". This TV does not support Wi-Fi at 5 GHz. 2.4 GHz only. If the specifications indicate 802.11ac support, then the TV supports the 5 GHz band.

If, as a result of the check, it turns out that your TV does not support a Wi-Fi connection, and you need to connect it to the Internet via a wireless network, then read this article: How to connect a TV without Wi-Fi to the Internet via Wi-Fi.

Using LG TV as an example

Let's take the LG 43UM7100PLB model. We find this model on the official LG website and look at the technical specifications (specifications). If there is a dot opposite "Wi-Fi Support", then there is support.

If "-" means no. It may also be written: "When connecting a WiFi adapter (AN-WF500)", "Optional", "(Support)". This means that you need to buy and connect an external USB Wi-Fi module (receiver). Only then will the wireless connection work on the TV.

If there is no information about Wi-Fi at all, then your TV model does not support a wireless network.

Samsung

Similarly, everything can be checked on the Samsung website. We take a model, for example, UE50NU7002UXUA and find a page with its characteristics on the Samsung website. "Built-in Wireless Networking" - "Yes"!

All this can be repeated with any TV manufacturer and any model. If there is no information on the official website, or you cannot understand something, look at other sites. It is only advisable to look at several sites, as they often make mistakes. I usually look in the descriptions of popular online stores, in reviews.

Solution # 2: looking for wireless settings in the Smart TV menu of the TV

The bottom line is to go to the TV settings, and in the "Network" section (usually it is called that), see if there are Wi-Fi (wireless network) settings there. If so, then most likely there is built-in support and you can connect your TV to your home wireless network.

On Android TVs, for example, this section is most likely called "Wired and Wireless Networks". And if there is a "Wireless" item in the "Network Connection" menu, then everything is Ok.

This is how it looks, for example, on LG TVs (new and old):

For more details on how to connect to a wireless network, see the following instructions:

  • How to connect your Samsung TV to Wi-Fi.
  • How to connect LG Smart TV to the Internet via Wi-Fi via a router.
  • How to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi Philips TV on Android TV.

If you have a Smart TV TV without wireless support, then the best option is to stretch the network cable. If this is not possible, then a repeater or a router can be used as a receiver. I gave a link to instructions for setting up such a scheme in the middle of this article.

Couldn't find out if there is Wi-Fi or not? Write your TV model in the comments - I'll try to suggest.
