Internet disappears on all devices after connecting a certain device to a Wi-Fi router

There is one interesting and mysterious problem that I have wanted to write about for a long time, but I did not have any information and solutions. The problem is that after connecting a new device to the router's Wi-Fi network, at the same moment the Internet on all previously connected devices disappears. The Wi-Fi network just "crashes". The new device "lays down" the router and everything starts working only after the router is restarted. And again until the moment when we connect this "harmful" device. I've heard about this issue many times in the comments on this site. And I did not know what to advise, since some simple and standard solutions do not help. We connected the device to Wi-Fi - everything froze.

As I already noticed, the Internet falls off after connecting a variety of devices. I mean that someone loses the Internet on all devices immediately after connecting the phone, and someone after connecting a laptop, TV, tablet, etc. And what is more interesting, this problem device works without problems with other wireless networks. Here is one of the comments describing a similar problem:The first thing that comes to mind is some kind of device conflict, or hardware incompatibility between the client device and the router. Of course, anything can happen. But it is very difficult to explain all this from the technical or software side and give any recommendations on the solution. Moreover, everyone has different routers and connected devices.

Since I have never encountered this problem, I have no proven and 100% working solutions. But there are several solutions that you can try to apply in this situation. First, it is advisable to do this:

  • Reboot the router and the device that "lays down" the wireless network.
  • Try to connect this problem device to another Wi-Fi network. To understand: the problem is only with your router, or with different ones.
  • Reset network settings on this device.
  • Update your router firmware. If there is a new version on the manufacturer's website.
  • If the router is configured with MAC address binding and other similar functions, disable them.
  • It is also advisable to make sure that the MAC addresses of all devices connected to the router are different. On mobile devices, the MAC address can be found in the settings, in the "about device" section. On the computer, in the command line, you can run the ipconfig / all command and see the "Physical address" of the adapter through which the connection to the router is made.

The main solution is to turn off the WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia) or WME (Wi-Fi Multimedia Extensions) mode, and / or change the mode of the router (b / g / n).

Important! Disabling WMM, or changing the Wi-Fi network operating mode may affect the Wi-Fi connection speed on all devices. Or cause problems with connecting other devices. You have to try and test. If there are any other problems, return the old settings (enable WMM, change the wireless network mode).

You need to go to the settings of the router, find the WMM, or WME item and disable it. Save settings and reboot the router. Then you need to try to connect this device and see if the Internet access is lost on other devices. Most often, this settings item in the web interface of the router is located in the section with additional (professional) wireless network settings.

Disabling WMM on a TP-Link router:

On ASUS router:

If you cannot find these settings on your router, then write the model in the comments - I will try to tell you where to look for them.

In the event that, after disabling the WMM function, this particular device continues to "lay down" the network after connecting, then you can try to experiment with the wireless network operating mode. For example, put only mode n. Or vice versa - mixed (b / g / n). Read more about this in the article: Wi-Fi network mode b / g / n / ac

I would be grateful for any information on this issue left in the comments to this article!
