When connecting to a Wi-Fi network, in Windows 7 it is not uncommon to see the error "Windows could not connect to ...". The name of the network to which you tried to connect will be indicated there. The error is actually very popular. It appears not only in Windows 7, but also in Windows 8 and Windows 10. The reasons and solutions are usually the same. If you have Windows 10, then see a separate article to solve the problem with "Unable to connect to this network." In the top ten there is a slight difference in the appearance of the menu items.

How it all looks: in the usual way, we try to connect to Wi-Fi in Windows 7, first goes "Connecting to (network name)":

And then the error appears "Windows could not connect to (Wi-Fi network name)":

One simple solution almost always helps. If you have encountered such an error on your computer, then now we will try to fix it. Most often, this error appears after you have changed some parameters of your network. Password, security type, etc. And before, you have already successfully connected to this network.

Solution of the error "Windows could not connect to ..."

The solution is simple: we need to delete our wireless network in the Windows 7 settings and reconnect.

Right-click on the Internet connection icon (in the lower right corner), and select Network and Sharing Center... Next, go to Wireless network management.

We are looking for a Wi-Fi network in the list, when connecting to which we get an error, right-click on it and select Delete.

A warning window will appear, click Yes.

I also described this whole process in the article: Remove Wi-Fi network on Windows 7.

And then, we just try to connect to this network again. A password request will appear, specify it, and everything should be connected. If you've forgotten your Wi-Fi password, see this article.

If the above method did not help:

This solution always helps me. But, you may have another reason, or something else. Therefore, a few more tips:

  • Reboot your router and computer.
  • Change your network password according to the instructions: https://help-wifi.com/nastrojka-zashhity-wi-fi-setej/kak-zashhitit-set-wi-fi-parolem/. Perhaps you have a security type installed that Windows 7 simply doesn't "like".
  • You can also change the name of the Wi-Fi network itself (SSID). After that, the laptop will "think" that this is a new network.
  • Also, when the error "Windows could not connect to Wi-Fi" appears, you can try changing the wireless network mode (b / g / n). This is how it looks on an ASUS router:
This is especially true if you have old laptop... Sometimes the router is set to the 802.11n operating mode, which older laptops may not support, but only work in the older 802.11g mode. Therefore, you need to check and set the "auto" or 802.11 b / g / n operating mode in the router settings. Remember to save your settings and reboot your router.

If the problem persists, the tips did not help, then describe in the comments after what it happened, and what you have already tried to do. I will try to advise something.
