Reconfiguring a router is when we change certain parameters of the router to work in different conditions, with a different Internet provider, devices, or when there is a need to configure the router again. That is, completely clear the old parameters and set the new settings - "configure from scratch". For example, after buying a router from your hands, which has already been configured and used by another user, and most likely with another provider.

Reconfiguring the router may be needed in several cases:

  • Reconfiguration to another provider - when we changed the Internet provider, or want to connect a router that has already been configured and used in a different location.
  • To another channel or a different frequency - we are talking either about changing the Wi-Fi network channel, or about changing the frequency (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). I'll tell you about this in more detail - read the article to the end.
  • For other reasons: forgot the password, blocked some device, turned on / off something and now the router does not work as it should, after updating the firmware, etc. In all these cases, you need to perform a full reset of the parameters to the factory settings (Reset) and re-setting.

Advice: if you have a used router that was configured by another user before you, then I recommend performing a full reset before reconfiguring and only after that set the necessary parameters. We do not know who changed what settings there. Better to clean them completely and set up your device like new. See the solution in the last section of this article.

Let's look at all these three cases in more detail and with real examples. With photos, screenshots - everything as you like.

To another provider

If you already had a router installed and you just changed your provider (specialists put another cable into the house, or switched you to an existing cable), then these same specialists, as a rule, immediately connect the Internet to the router and configure it on their own. But if for some reason you had to reconfigure the router yourself, then it is not necessary to reset, change the name of the Wi-Fi network, password, etc. It is enough to go to the router settings, to the section with the Internet connection settings and change the connection parameters for the new Internet -provider.

Important! To set things up correctly, you must have the information you need to set up. You need to know what type of connection the new provider uses and whether it binds by MAC address (this is rare, but it does happen). This information must be in the internet connection agreement. Or on the provider's website. In any case, you can always call support.

We do this:

  1. We go to the router settings according to this instruction.
  2. Go to the section with Internet connection parameters. It is usually called the "Internet" (Internet), or "WAN".
  3. Next, we select the type of connection that our provider uses and set the parameters (if necessary). For "Dynamic IP (DHCP)" you do not need to configure anything additionally (select it and save the settings). For PPPoE, you need to register a username and password. And for PPTP and L2TP - username, password and server address. All these parameters are provided by the provider. For example, TP-Link router:
On TP-Link with old web interface.
    Reconfiguring ASUS Router:
    Reconfiguring ZyXEL:
    Reconfiguring a D-Link router:
  4. If you have a different router, or its web interface looks different, then look for instructions specifically for your model. You can use the search on our site (search bar in the upper right corner).

The main task is to correctly specify the necessary parameters in the router settings so that the router can connect to a new provider. If it does not connect, it will not distribute the Internet to other devices.

If you cannot configure it, then it is important to remember that the problem is not always in the router or settings. Therefore, it is advisable to check if the Internet works when connected to a computer directly. And feel free to call your internet provider's support team.

To another channel or frequency

Everything is simple here. If you want to change the channel of the Wi-Fi network, then here is a detailed instruction - How to find a free Wi-Fi channel and change the channel on the router?

If we are talking about retuning to 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, then I do not quite understand what you want to do in this case. If you have a single-band router that does not support 5 GHz, then it cannot be added or configured. You need to change your router. If the router is dual-band, there is support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, then you can configure a Wi-Fi network on each of the bands in the web interface of the router, in the corresponding section.

For example, a TP-Link dual-band router:

Separately change the settings (name, password) for each range.

Perhaps I misunderstood something. If anything - add or correct me in the comments.

Full reconfiguration of the router

This is when we first do a factory reset of the router, and then configure the router as new. It is this method that I recommend using in the case when you have a router that has already been configured by someone before.

This is done in two steps:

  1. First, reset the settings. You need to find a button on the router "Reset" ("RST", "Reset", "Default"), press it and hold it for 10-15 seconds. The device must be turned on. Usually this button is recessed into the body (protected from accidental presses), or combined with other functions. For example, with WPS activation, or Wi-Fi off.
Here are more detailed instructions on how to reset the settings on routers from: TP-Link, ASUS, D-Link.
  2. After restoring the factory settings, we do the reconfiguration. That is, we configure the router for our provider. We set the Wi-Fi network settings. Change the administrator password. It is best to do this according to the instructions that are included with the router, or according to the instructions that are written specifically for your model. We have many detailed instructions for different routers on our website. You can find them through the site search.
If you don’t find it here, look at other sites (via Google, Yandex). Or see the universal instructions: how to connect and configure a Wi-Fi router? Step by step instructions for all models.

You can always write to me in the comments and ask your question on the topic of this article. Just do not forget to indicate the model of your router and describe in detail the problem itself.
