If you just bought the Asus RT-N18U, or decided to re-configure it, then this manual is for you. Now I will tell you how to configure the Asus RT-N18U router. We will connect it to a computer (if there is no computer, then you can configure it from a tablet), configure an Internet connection with a provider, configure a Wi-Fi network, and set a password for Wi-Fi.

Since almost all new Asus routers have the same-looking firmware, the Asus RT-N18U setting will not differ much from the settings of other routers of this company. But I think that a separate instruction for a specific model will definitely not be superfluous. Moreover, I have the RT-N18U model, so the instruction will be with a photo and a real example.

If you want to configure Asus RT-N18U to work with a 3G USB modem, then see the special instructions at this link.

Below we will consider setting up a router specifically for working with cable Internet, which is connected to the WAN (RJ-45) connector of the router.

Connecting Asus RT-N18U and preparing for setup

First, you need to decide how we will configure the router. More precisely, how we will connect to it for configuration. Wi-Fi, or network cable. If you set up from a tablet or smartphone, then it's clear that you will connect via Wi-Fi network. If possible, then I advise you to still connect the computer to the router using the cable that comes with the kit. Only for configuration, then you can disconnect the cable and connect, for example, via Wi-Fi.

Take a network cable and connect your computer to the Asus RT-N18U. On a computer or laptop, we connect it to the connector of the network card, and on the router to one of the 4 LAN connectors.

If you will be configuring via Wi-Fi, then simply connect to an open Wi-Fi network named "Asus"which will appear immediately after turning on the router. By the way, don't forget to connect the antennas.

And of course, you need to connect the Internet to the Asus RT-N18U router. Connect a cable from an Internet provider, or from an ADSL modem to the WAN connector of the router.

Check if the power of the router is on. On the front panel, the indicators should be on.

Factory reset on Asus RT-N18U

If the router is not new, then do a factory reset. On the back, there is a dedicated button. Click on it and hold it for at least 10 seconds. The router should reboot.

Perhaps some settings have already been made in the router. And they can hinder us. And if during the setup process you do something wrong, you can always reset the settings and start over from the beginning.

Instructions for setting up Asus RT-N18U

The main thing that you should know before setting up a Wi-Fi router is the type of connection with your Internet provider. Most likely it is Dynamic IP, PPPoE, L2TP, or PPTP. Also, you need to find out the necessary information, such as: username, password, server, IP address. It already depends on what type of connection your ISP is using.

If you haveDynamic IP, or connection via ADSL modem, then everything is set up very simply. In any case, to configure the router, we need to go to the control panel. On the device that you connected to the Asus RT-N18U, you need to open the browser and type the address in the address bar 192.168.1.1... Here are detailed instructions for entering settings. The address to enter the settings and other information (MAC address, default username and password) are listed on the bottom of your Asus RT-N18U.

As soon as you go to 192.168.1.1, the quick setup wizard will open. If you are prompted for a username and password, then reset the settings as I wrote above, and go to the settings again.

In the main window, click on the button Manual configuration... If you select Go, the router will try to determine your connection type itself. But, he does not always do it successfully. And in order not to get confused, it's better to configure it manually.

The router will immediately ask us to set a password to protect the settings. Standard admin, and we need to change it. Come up with a good password and enter it twice. This password will need to be specified when entering the settings of the Asus RT-N18U router. Click the button Further.

In the window for selecting the operating mode of the router, leave the Wireless router, and click Further... By the way, we have instructions for setting up an Asus router in repeater mode.

Next, the most important thing. Setting up the Internet. You need to select the type of connection, with a password or not. If your ISP gave you a username and password to connect to the Internet, then select Yes, and press Further... This is your connection PPPoE, L2TP, or PPTP.

If you have a Dynamic IP, Static IP, or a modem connection, then select No, and press Further.

If you selected Yes, you will need to provide a username and password. These are mandatory settings, provided by the provider. Perhaps, if your provider makes a binding by MAC address, then you will need to clone the MAC address (in this case, you must configure the router from the computer to which the Internet was connected). Or, set some more parameters. It all depends on your ISP. You can safely call support and ask about everything.

If you selected No (Dynamic IP, static, or modem connection), then you will need to select Automatic IP (DHCP), or Static IP... If the provider did not give you any connection data, then you have Automatic IP (DHCP). Select and press the button Further.

After that, the router will offer us to set up a Wi-Fi network. Set Wi-Fi network name and password. Come up with a name for your network, and a key. This password will need to be specified when connecting to your Wi-Fi. Ask them and click Apply.

We look at all the parameters we set, write down the password from the Wi-Fi network somewhere and press the button Done.

A new Wi-Fi network will appear, with the name that we specified during the setup process. Connect to it using the set password. The router is configured. If the Internet is already working, then everything is fine, you can use it. We set up the Internet, set the password for the Wi-Fi network, and protected the settings as well.

If something doesn't work, then you can try to reset the settings and start over, or change the settings manually in the control panel. Now I will show you how to manually configure the Internet, change the Wi-Fi network settings and password.

Setting up the Internet and Wi-Fi network in the Asus RT-N18U control panel

To enter the settings again, you need to connect to the router, open the address in the browser 192.168.1.1 and provide a username and password. The username is most likely admin (if you haven't changed it), and we set the password during the setup process.

You can change the name of the Wi-Fi network, or the password, right on the main settings page. Or, in the tab Wireless network.

Well, you can set up the Internet on the tab the Internet... There you can change the connection type and set the required parameters.

That's all for the Asus router. These are of course the most basic ones, in fact, there are a lot of settings there. If your router has a USB connector, then you may still be interested in reading about connecting USB drives to Asus routers.

Well, after setup, you can update the router's firmware.

If something does not work out, then ask questions in the comments, I will try to help!
