Hello! Now we will connect and configure the Tp-link TL-WR841N Wi-Fi router. If your model is TL-WR841ND, then this manual will also work for you. Let's take a look at the whole process of connecting a router, setting up the Internet, Wi-Fi networks and setting a password for a Wi-Fi network.

All this with a photo and a detailed description. So you shouldn't have any problems with configuring the Tp-link TL-WR841N router. Just follow the instructions.

A few words about Tp-link TL-WR841N (TL-WR841ND). A very successful Wi-Fi router model that is very popular. Indeed, a successful model with an excellent price / quality ratio. It seems to me that for home use, an undemanding user cannot find a better router. I myself, in practice, checked the operation of the Tp-link TL-WR841N. It has been working great for more than five years now, distributing Wi-Fi to a large number of devices. It works very stably, I don't even remember that it would once have lost the Internet, or something else. You can read more about Tp-link TL-WR841N on this page. There you will find a small review, and my review.

If you already bought this router, then it's time to move on to setting up. Let's do everything according to the following scheme:

  • Connecting a Tp-link TL-WR841N router.
  • Setting up an Internet connection (WAN).
  • Setting up a Wi-Fi network on TL-WR841N.
  • Setting a password for protecting a Wi-Fi network.
  • Changing the admin password, which protects the router settings.

Connecting Tp-link TL-WR841N

Connect the power adapter to the router, and plug it into a power outlet. If the indicators on the router do not light up, then turn on the power with the button located on the back panel.

If you will be setting up the router using a cable (which comes with the kit) by connecting it to a computer or laptop, then take a network cable and connect it to the computer with the router. On the router, we connect the cable to the LAN connector (to one of 4):

We connect the other end of the network cable on the computer to the socket of the network card:

Further, to the router, into the WAN connector (it is blue) you need to connect the cable of your Internet provider, or from the ADSL modem.

Connection and configuration via Wi-Fi network

If you want to configure the router via Wi-Fi, and not when connecting via cable, then you just need to connect to the Wi-Fi network, which will appear immediately after turning on the power on the Tp-link TL-WR841N router. The network will have a standard name (something like this: "TP-LINK_084313"), and will not be protected.

You can even connect to this network from a tablet or phone and set up a router without a computer.

You probably found a disc included with the TL-WR841N. There is a utility for configuring the router. So, we will configure without a disk, through the web interface of the router. The disc will not be useful to us in this manual. If you want to configure through the utility from the disk, then you can do it according to this instruction.

The Internet must be connected to the router. And your computer, tablet, laptop, etc. must be connected to Tp-link via cable, or via Wi-Fi. The router must be powered on. If everything is ready, then you can proceed to setting up.

Configuring the Tp-link TL-WR841N router

We need to go to the settings of the TL-WR841N router. To do this, on the computer to which it is connected, open any browser, and in the address bar, go to 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1... You should be prompted for a username and password. Please indicate admin and admin (standard password and username). By the way, this information is indicated on the bottom of the router on a sticker. Here is a detailed instruction on how to enter the settings on Tp-link, just in case.

The router settings will open.

If you wish, you can update the firmware on the TL-WR841N. You can do this after setup. Or not update at all.

It may be that the settings at 192.168.1.1 will not open, or the admin password will not work, and you will not be able to enter the settings. In this case, you need to reset the settings on the Tp-link TL-WR841N router. There is a RESET button on the back of the router, press it with something sharp, and hold it for 10 seconds. The indicators on the front panel should all light up and the router will reboot. Resetting the settings can be done in the same way if you have already tried to configure something, but nothing worked. We reset the settings to factory defaults, and try to configure the router again.

Internet setup (WAN)

The most important thing is to configure the router to work with your ISP. If this is not done, or if it is done incorrectly, then the Internet through the router will not work. A Wi-Fi network will appear, but without internet access.

In the settings go to the tabNetwork - WAN... In the dropdown listWAN Connection Type you need to select the type of connection that your ISP uses. This can be: Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP, or PPTP. For example, I have Dynamic IP, so I selected it. To save the settings, press the button Save.

If you, like me, have a Dynamic IP, then you do not need to set any parameters. We select, save, and the router starts distributing the Internet.

Configuring PPPoE, L2TP, and PPTP

If your provider uses one of the above connection methods, then select the one you need and set the necessary parameters that the provider should give you: username, password, IP address. It already depends on the type of connection you have chosen and the provider.

The main thing that needs to be achieved from the settings on this page is to make the Internet work through the router. If the Internet works, then click on the button Save, and we continue. If it is not possible to configure, then call your Internet provider and check with him all the data that is necessary to configure the router.

If your computer has a configured high-speed Internet connection, then we no longer need it. You don't need to run it. Our router will now launch such a connection. You just need to configure it correctly.

It may also be such that the provider makes a binding by the MAC address (you need to check with the provider), in which case you can clone the MAC in the router settings, on the Network tab - MAC Clone. Or, there you can change the MAC address of the router.

If you still can't make friends between the router and the provider, then perhaps the article will still come in handy for you: When setting up the router, it writes "Without access to the Internet", or "Limited".

And if the router has already connected to the provider and distributes the Internet, then you can continue the configuration.

Setting up a Wi-Fi network and setting a password on a Tp-link TL-WR841N router

To configure Wi-Fi, you need to open the tab on the settings pageWireless - Wireless Settings... On this page we need in the fieldWireless Network Name come up with and write down a name for your Wi-Fi network, and in the drop-down menuRegion choose the country where you live. Leave the rest of the settings as I have in the screenshot below.

Don't forget to save your settings by clicking on the button Save.

To protect our wireless network with a password, go to the tabWireless - Wireless Security... There you need to highlight the type of securityWPA / WPA2 - Personal (Recommended).

In fieldPSK Password come up with and write down a password that will protect your Wi-Fi network. You can read more about setting a password on a TL-WR841N router in this article.

Save the settings by clicking the button Save.

Password change admin. Securing router settings

I already wrote in a separate article about how to change the default admin password in the router settings. Let's, while we are in the Tp-link TL-WR841N settings, immediately change the password that is used to protect the settings page. So that everyone who will connect to your network cannot enter the router settings and change them.

Open the tabSystem Tools - Password... Enter your old username and password first (default is admin). Then, enter the new username below (you can leave it as admin) and the new password. I advise you to write down this password somewhere so as not to forget. Save settings with Save.

That's all, the configuration of the Tp-link TL-WR841N router is complete. It remains only to reboot the router. This can be done by turning off / on the power, or from the settings. In the tabSystem Tools - Reboot, you need to click on the Reboot button.

After setting up, and rebooting, a Wi-Fi network will appear, with the name that we set during the setup process. And to connect to a wireless network, use the password that we also set when setting up the router.

You can already connect your devices to the router. If you set up by cable, but want to connect via Wi-Fi, then the laptop can be disconnected from the router and connected wirelessly.

I will also leave a link to an article with a solution to a popular problem, which I hope you did not encounter - "No Internet access" in Windows 7, and "Limited connection" in Windows 10.

You can leave your feedback and questions in the comments!
